~Three Months Ago~

The wind whistled through the air as Shingen raised an arm to cover his face from its sharp grasp. It was a chilly wind, but it was merely a promise of the things to come. His face was shielded by a blue scarf, but the wind still chilled his nose and chapped his lips. His other hand was kept buried in the pocket of his black wool pants. He had replaced his usual short-sleeve shirt with layers of undershirts, covered by a black-buttoned woolen jacket. He waited at the base of the Kang Mountains, staring up at their lofty peaks. Despite the fact that it was spring, the mountains were capped with white snow. It was just as Rei had promised they would be, many months ago.

The mountains were equally impressive to Shingen because of their immense height. They rivaled the taller mountains of Kumogakure, which had always impressed the boy. Coming from the Sand Village, the Blue Tiger had grown up amid sand-dunes and flat plains. At the top of the mountains, he knew, there would be a sprawling temple complex, in which resided a wise monk. Today, it was Shingen's personal mission to seek out that monk, named Kang. After his talks with Yui, Shingen had resolved to travel the world, to learn about religion, life, and death, in a quest to find his own answers to the problems that swirled in his head.

Traversing the mountain would be no easy task, and the Land of Fire probably wouldn't have been happy with a foreign shinobi wandering around their lands unsupervised, so Shingen had put in a request for a supervisor from Konohagakure. In a sense, he was the mission-requester, sending out a request for a village shinobi to help him with a problem. However, in this case, Shingen had requested a very specific person to come to show him around.

It was a promise, Shingen thought, a smile tugging on the edges of his lips. He shifted side-to-side, hardly able to contain his excitement as he waited for the arrival of his escort. After having received news ahead of time that she had accepted the mission and chosen to be his escort, Shingen had been so excited that he was hardly able to focus on anything else. The image of those crystalline blue eyes danced through his head, and flushed his face as much as the cold did.

"Still... This kind of reminds me of when we first met. She dug me out of the snow. Well, at least I'm not lost this time," he thought aloud, his words followed by his signature boisterous laugh.

Small, unhurried steps made their quiet way up the path, where so many had tread before them. It was a clear day, but this high up it was cold, and the air was thin, making the wind particularly harsh when it blew. Luckily, the breezes came few, and so Rei, clad in the standard uniform of a Konoha ninja with her headband around her neck, moved smoothly up to the place where she was told she'd be meeting with the visitor from Sunagakure no Sato. Normally she'd not have been available, but this particular visitor was a Jinchuuriki and had asked for her specifically, so it seemed prudent that someone able to handle the kind of wild rage that a Bijuu could unleash would be sent. It was lucky for Shingen, really, that she qualified for such a mission, otherwise his request likely would have been denied, and she'd have been sent to, well, someone likely paying better.

I wonder how he's been doing? she allowed herself to think, imagining the little brown jewelry box with the worn red felt inside, occupied only by a simple silver wristband. It was on her dresser at home, but she could imagine it with stunning clarity. As she walked, stride taking her up the mountain a bit, she allowed herself to think of Shingen as the last time she saw him, smiling weakly, holding up a strained 'v' from his hospital bed. While the girl did not really ever refuse a mission, she wanted right then to turn around and march back down into Konoha, toss herself on her bed and bury her face into her pillow. It would be nice, warm, dark, and best of all, solitary. He was likely to expect her to be the girl that he thought she was, and while she could do that, she knew also that it was an act. Just escort him around. Be polite. Don't be too inviting. You can manage that, she resolved.

A sound ahead, laughter, alerted her that she had come to the space she had been directed to, and, turning in that direction to wander up over the side of the mountain, Rei adjusted her flak jacket. She had grown since she'd worn this uniform last, and the pants were tight, the jacket just a little bit more constricting than she'd remembered as well. Oh, well – it was too late to consider changing, now. “Shin-kun,” she announced, walking in from the expected direction. “You must have quite a lot of free time.”

A melodic voice broke the silence that was left behind by Shingen's laughing. It was a voice that he had not heard in many months, but to the chuunin, it was unmistakable. Turning to face the direction from which the voice had come, Shingen's dark blue eyes were met with a pair of light blue ones, much fairer than his own. A grin spread across the chuunin's face, jogged over a couple of feet to meet her half-way. "Yo, senpai!" He greeted, bustling with energy. The cold wins that were assaulting his face mere moments ago were all but forgotten, as the chill that plagued him was replaced with a warmth running through Shingen's body. Just glancing at Rei, her crystalline eyes, her silky hair, her perfect features, caused Shingen's heart to beat faster. He had always regreted that their previous encounter had ended on such a sad note, but knowing that he was going to part ways with her for such a long time, he figured there wouldn't really be a happy way to do that.

"Hisashiburi da na," He commented, looking Rei up and down. She was wearing a flak jacket now, and looked more like a regular jounin than she ever had in Kumogakure. In a sense, she looked more normal. It was a pretty look, even combined with the fact that her uniform was a bit tight in places, but Shingen didn't let his gaze linger too long, so as to avoid accusations of lewdness.

"Well, we all have to take breaks sometimes, yeah? After six months of work in the Land of Lightning, I'd say I earned my fair share of vacation days How've you been, senpai?"

Rei let his gaze linger where it would, neither admonishing nor encouraging. Her hair lifted in the breeze, and she turned her face into the wind so that her vision was not obscured as he spoke. His energetic attitude always seemed so innocent, despite the fact that a tailed beast resided inside of him. He was host to the Niibi, but he didn't seem to let its hate and rage consume him...at least, not often, and never permanently. "Still, you must be quite lucky to be able to travel all the way here on your own," she offered, gesturing forward so that they might begin to traverse the path. She put her foot upon what appeared to be an old, worn step, but the well-trodden area ahead did not seem very much like a staircase. She moved with the confidence of one that had done this before.

While the girl had taken the lead, she did glance back over her shoulder, down at the junior ninja. "Tell me, have you kept up with your training?" She was genuinely curious if those silly people he called his teachers were still pushing impractical lessons upon him. No doubt they were fine ninja in their own right, but she couldn't wrap her head around their style of fighting. It was going to get one of them killed, one day.

"Bwahahaha!" Shingen laughed, following Rei up the side of the mountain. The very act of doing so reminded him of old times; following her along the winding Kumogakure mountainsides had become a routine activity during the four months that he spent at the Konoha base-camp, so doing so now caused some nostalgia to well up in the chuunin's chest. It was a pleasant feeling. "Knowing my sensei, I'm sure I was followed. Not particularly closely, but if I don't come down the mountain, I'm sure there'll be a Suna-nin here looking for me forty-eight hours later. He became Kazekage, you know. Shortly after the mission in the Land of Lightning," he said, his voice trailing off. Of course, it was very likely that this Konoha ANBU knew who the Kazekage was, but Shingen couldn't recall if he had ever told her the name of his sensei, and that the two were the same person.

"I've been keeping up with my training, to the best of my ability, anyway. That's actually why I'm here... I wanted to come and visit the temple at the top of the mountain. I wouldn't say I've become spiritual, exactly, but... I dunno, maybe that is the right thing to say. I'm not really sure what to believe myself," he said with a soft laugh, closing his eyes as if to hide the pain. His voice grew quieter, more solemn as he spoke again. "So much as changed since back then," he said, referring to their time at the base camp. Ever since his fight with the masked Fox, everything had changed. He had felt like, since that moment, the innocuous, innocent life that he had led before had been snatched away from him.

After a long, quiet moment, he decided to deflect the conversation away from himself. No reason to show his senpai how uncertain he was! "So, what about you? How have you been, senpai?"

Face turned back toward Shingen for another long moment as she moved forward, the eyebrow nearest to him raised slightly. Spiritual? It didn’t seem like something Rei would attribute to him, and she herself had not really put much stock in belief in higher powers or the like. His experience in Kaminari no Kuni had clearly stuck with him. A sudden ache in her chest caused the girl to look forward again, avoiding a rock that she might otherwise have kicked away. “I’ve been…” she started, remembering suddenly a different place in the province, where she danced in a dingy, poorly lit building. “…fine,” the girl continued, tugging down at the bottom of her vest. She walked on, the thin mountain air causing her chest to tighten up. She was used to it, honestly – in fact, these very mountains were a place that she had trained, herself.

“Shin-kun, do you want revenge on the ninja that harmed you in the Land of Lightning?” she asked suddenly, pearly teeth clutching at her plush bottom lip. She pushed up a particularly tall step, and let her gaze slide out across the hills, clouds lazily floating in long strings across the blue sky.

Unable to avoid the topic as he might have wanted, the exact turn that the conversation took surprised the boy. He ran a hand through his black hair, taking a moment to collect his thoughts, though that didn't stop a sudden and abrupt "Uhh," from slipping out of his mouth when he first heard the question. It was a difficult question, of course. He did his best to recall the masked face of the figure. It had been dark that night, and he was so scared. He wasn't sure if he was remembering the mask well or not. He wasn't really sure if the mask was fox-shaped at all, he just knew that was the name that the other Suna-nin had attributed to the figure. Thinking back to his would-be-murderer, a tightness welled up in Shingen's gut.

It certainly was an uncomfortable subject.

His footsteps followed after his senpai's as they talked, echoing slightly in-between Shingen's statements. "That's... a hard question. There's a part of me that wants to, yes..." He said, casting his eyes to the ground, as if he were ashamed. "But I think that part of me is wrong. I'm not exactly convinced that taking revenge is the right thing to do. What does it solve? Those kind of questions are kind-of why I've come here, actually. I can forgive them for attacking me, I think. I want to, at least. If I could meet them again, I would want to apologize to them. I was the one that attacked them, after all..."

He trailed off, looking up at the tops of the frost-covered mountains. He wondered, for a moment, if it was possible for his heart to be as cold as those chilly mountain peaks. "I can forgive them for attacking sensei, too... I shouldn't hold grudges, but... If they had killed sensei, either Kyousuke, or Satoru, or anyone close to me... I'm afraid that I wouldn't be able to," he confessed, allowing himself to be vulnerable around his senior.

Turning his gaze to look at Rei, allowing his bright blue eyes to meet hers, he showed no fear. Only absolute trust, readily locking gazes with an Uchiha who could have trapped him right there, had she the desire. "What do you think, senpai? Should I want revenge? Is revenge a good thing? ... Would you seek revenge?"

The hard stone beneath her feet made Rei feel at the very least grounded and connected to something solid as they walked. Another chill breeze reminded her that the beautiful day could be quite cold if it wanted, but Rei found her heart beating a little faster, a hopeful, light feeling in her chest accompanying Shingen’s words. For her part, the Uchiha would not want vengeance for what happened, even had she been the one attacked. She was happy that he seemed ambivalent toward the idea of forgiveness, but an uncomfortable feeling hit her toward the end of his reply. Of course he would do more, feel more, for the sake of another. What if she had killed the other ANBU operative – one she knew now had definitively been one Chikamatsu Kyousuke, a dangerous man who had recently become the Kazekage. Shingen, here, was saying that he wasn’t sure if he could forgive that. She had not killed anyone from Sunagakure no Sato, she knew, so why did she suddenly feel as though some cold hand had just gripped her heart? She did not fear Shingen so much as fear for him. If she really did kill him, then…what would happen? She certainly would not forgive herself.

“I think that many people would want some kind of recompense. They are prideful, and do not handle loss well. Loss, however, is a part of life,” she continued, letting her eyes glance back and meet his. “It’s good to let this go. I would not look to avenge what only amounts to pride,” the girl replied in that eerily calm way she had. Her unease did not show. The conversation had turned in a way that she had hoped it would, but she knew if it had gone differently it would be her fault.

Altogether, Rei seemed relatively neutral towards his answer, but Shingen was glad to know that his own answer was somewhat in-line with hers. However, one thing in particular that she said jumped out at the chuunin. "Loss is a part of life, huh?" He echoed, glancing up at the temple on the top of the mountain, which was beginning to come into view at the far ends of Shingen's vision. It was an impressive structure, to be sure. It was large temple complex built atop the mountain's peak, but Shingen had expected it to look more serene than it did at a glance. Instead, it looked almost eerie. It looked as if it hadn't been touched in years; but was there not a great monk who resided at the top?

Shingen's unease showed clearly on his face. He wasn't the type of person that hid his emotions in most circumstances. Unlike Rei, who could pass as a blank page at any moment, Shingen was an open book. As they continued their trek towards the desolate temple, Shingen resumed speaking. "My aunt told me something similar, recently. She said that all life is suffering. I wonder if that's true or not. She said that we all try to lessen our suffering, which is why we interact with others, because things like love ease our pain," he explained, repeating Yui's lesson. As he did so, his blue eyes gazed at Rei, as his mind danced back to the words he had not said months ago. He wondered now how things might have been different if he had confessed to her on that snowy winter night.

Blue eyes picked up the temple as it sprawled across the upper parts of the mountain, and took in its relatively simple design. Pillars of stone held up tiered, sloping roofs and floors seemed to grow directly out of the jagged mountain stone, as though the mountain had grown up around the temple, rather than the temple having been built atop it. She had been here before – the old man in Konoha had bade her come this way, and to train on top. During her many visits, she had never seen anyone, but then again, she had not ever gone more deeply than the bell shrine into the place. Perhaps all the monks were further in. They couldn’t see the entrance from here, but the staircase became better defined, and she suddenly ached in the shoulders and hands, a psychosomatic memory. Training here had been something of a chore, but her hardened body and resistance to most discomfort was owed to her travels to the temple.

“All life is suffering? That seems nihilistic. Loss is a part of life, but so is love,” For most people, anyway. “If all life is suffering, then those that spread suffering are just…living. I don’t think I can accept that.” The girl moved further up as she spoke, turning where the stairs turned and glancing back to make certain that Shingen was still following. “I think those that actively spread suffering are like a void…like a great Darkness that consumes the rest of the Light and life. They must be stopped,” she continued, another cool breeze blowing through the area.

There was a nuance to Rei's replies that interested Shingen. Her views were similar to Yui's own views, but there was a coldness there. A willingness to smite evil where it stood, where Yui instead embodied a compassion that was ready to reform the evil, to confront it with love rather than hate. Which is right, I wonder? Shingen thought to himself, his brow furrowing in confusion. He could feel the beginnings of a headache coming on, causing him to take several deep breaths of the thin, crisp mountain air in an attempt to slow its onset. "I think we're supposed to try and help the misguided, instead of killing them, if we can. After-all, you don't cull a sick man, you treat him. I think, or at least, my aunt says, that it's the same."

Shingen trailed off for a moment, growing quiet as he sifted through his memories. Rei's reply was righteous, but stern, even cold. Was the world so black and white, and even then, was it so easy to condemn another to die? Shingen had taken many lives in his time as a ninja. He had grown used to the feeling. But now, the thoughts of doing so consumed him with guilt. Did Rei feel guilt when she took a life? Shingen wasn't sure of the answer. He knew that his senpai was a woman with two faces. One side of her could be gentle, sweet, and caring. Another part of her was cold as ice and as unmoving as the mountain they walked on.

"I don't think you're that cold-hearted, senpai. Even you don't stamp out all the Darkness when you see it. Otherwise, I don't think you would have saved me that night. You know as well as I the Darkness that dwells in my heart. Maybe that's because you, like me, think that even the darkest among us can be reformed Maybe even Matatabi can change some day. Or maybe, there's another reason you saved me?" Shingen asked, leaving the question open to interpretation. He always had the vague feeling in the back of his head that, if he had kissed her that night, she may have returned his affection. He wasn't sure of it, but to think otherwise made his heart ache.

A flash of sympathy, and of guilt, crossed Rei. "Some people may have that responsibility," she replied to his initial statement. Yes, some people could save others from their course, perhaps, but the girl did not see how. She did not possess the skill. The only skills she had been able to hone were that of removal. "You can't treat everyone," she continued, making her way up another winding set of steps, these carved where egress was easiest rather than making a straight line. She didn't continue her explanation, lest she insult his aunt's philosophy, however. It was a nice thought, and she wondered briefly if everyone in Suna were so...optimistic. Remembering Kyousuke, however, she realized it probably wasn't so. His aura was too...menacing. Perhaps he was like her. A Darkness fighting against its nature.

"I..." she began, but trailed off, a sudden sting in her eyes. She blinked it away, stepping forward a little more urgently. She had nearly killed Shingen, that night. "...you are not Matatabi. If I thought for a second that it had corrupted you..." Rei continued. ...you'd see how Dark I could be. "...well, it wouldn't come to that. I can help control it, if I am around. Luckily you seemed to have run yourself out of energy that night."

You're not a weapon, Shingen thought bitterly to himself, his brows furrowing when Rei described a group of people whose job was to eliminate the Darkness. The implication, of course, was that she included herself in that group. You're so much more than that, senpai. The chuunin could only wish that Rei didn't beat herself up so much. She was capable of so much good, but first, she needed to learn how to forgive herself. Shingen did not know the things that Rei had done, but whatever it was, it didn't matter. No crime was beyond redemption. Shingen could tell that his senpai carried a heavy burden, a weight that steeled her nerves and clutched at her heart. Like a drowning man with a weight on his legs, her dismay only dragged her further and further down. As more was made, the burden grew, and the further down she sank.

But change wasn't impossible. He knew that first hand. He, like, Rei, had sacrificed a part of himself for his village. He knew what it was like to kill simply because it was commanded, to snuff out the light inside an innocent man. Over time, he had grown accustomed to that feeling. With each kill, the task became easier. With each name added to the list of victims, they all muddled together, until you couldn't remember them all. At some point, it simply becomes easier for the drowning man to let himself drown. To accept what is happening to you, rather than to struggle and to fight. You just become so tired.

It weighed heavily on Shingen's heart. He, too, was a weapon once. And yet, Shingen now quested to find peace and absolution. Despite all that he had done, he was not above redemption. After his talk with his aunt, he stopped trying to kill his guilt. He stopped trying to smother it and hide it away. He accepted what was, perhaps, the most difficult thing to accept of all. He was guilty. What he had done was wrong, regardless of the reasons that he was told to do it. It took someone close to him, his aunt Yui, to ease the burden of his heart. Some things are too heavy to lift alone.

He let his gaze fall to Rei's back, his blue eyes resting on the girl's shoulders. They were slender, sloped downwards in the perfect display of femininity. They were, in a word, beautiful. They were held with perfect posture, not tense, nor rigid, but perfectl upright, as if she were a statue. Shingen wondered what kind of burden that his senpai carried, for regardless of how heavy it might be, she did not let it show. Perhaps that was merely a sign that she carried a burden heavier than most. Those with the greatest burdens tended to hide them the best. As they became accustomed to the weight, they learned better ways to hide it. Shingen had adopted his sense of humor in a similar way. For a moment, an image of the Fox flashed before his eyes. He wondered what kind of burden that the masked figure carried.

The young Mangetsu boy felt his heart skip a beat, as the two came to a stop in front of the entrance to the temple complex. The temple was lightly dusted in white snow, which only made Shingen's chest tighten more, reminding him of all of the days spent with Rei at the ruined temple in the Land of Lightning. For once, Shingen felt himself at a loss for words, as he remained stationary in front of the temple entrance, not yet willing to enter the temple. For he knew that, once the two had entered the temple, the tone would change entirely, and their present conversation would end, committed instead only to memory.

The chuunin didn't want the conversation to end here. He didn't feel like it could end just yet. His heart was beating like crazy, he felt slightly nauseous, and his head was pounding. There were so many things that he wanted to say, so many different words jumbled around in his head that he couldn't be sure which ones were the right ones. He knew that he wanted to help this girl. Part of it was out of obligation. It was only natural to want to help the senpai that had helped him. Rei had taught him and saved him, and so it was only natural that Shingen would want to help save her from herself. However, it was more than that. Perhaps, even, because of that, at least partially, there was another reason he wanted to help her.

"Iloveyou!" He blurted out, letting the words tumble from his mouth as he clenched his fists, his eyes squeezing shut. His breathing was heavy, and his heart was beating so fast it felt like it would explode as he awaited an answer.

However, the voice that answered was not the one that he had expected.

"Fufufufu, how quaint. An Uchiha and a jinchuuriki, what an apt pairing." The voice was haughty but smooth, seeming to echo from all around the temple, like a snake coiling around its prey. A soft chuckle caused the temple grounds to rumble, as Shingen's eyes darted open, and he unconsciously slid into a battle stance.

"It's a shame it will never work out, because the two of you will never leave this place alive."

As she crested the final step, Rei squinted slightly before cocking her head. Shingen had gone quiet, too, and her assumption was that he felt it, as well. There was something off, something that she had not felt here before. It was a sense of dread, as though something which could compete with even her prodigious might had settled its malevolent gaze upon them. The Uchiha swallowed, but before she could do anything, Shingen’s voice blurted out a single word. She couldn’t decipher its meaning, at first, but then as her short-term memory replayed the echoing syllables, she realized it wasn’t one word, but three smashed together. She had suspected he might feel this way, and had refrained from inspecting her own feelings too closely. She felt good when he was around. She wanted to see him when he wasn’t there. She wanted his attention. It was only too bad that she realized they would end in tragedy, and therefore would deny his affection to deny him harm. It was almost a relief that some other entity, the one who had caused the hair on the back of her neck to rise slightly, chose to show itself then, because she couldn’t say she returned his feelings and did not want to deal with his heartbreak just then.

Instantly, blue turned to crimson dotted in black, and her hands moved up in a tight guard stance. Breath exhaled, and the girl took in another deep, calming gulp of air, letting her adrenaline course but smoothing out her tightened muscles and shaky reactions. “If we’re intruding, we can just come back later,” she offered, but the girl had a sense that it wasn’t their intrusion this person found offensive. It was life.

A sinister laugh followed after Rei's offer, once more causing the ground to shake underfoot. "Now that would be cruel, to let the two of you live and suffer. Better that you die now and avoid a lifetime of pain," As the voice finished speaking, a figure emerged from the central temple building. He was tall, almost monstrously so, at over nine feet tall. He had a large, bushy black beard and dark skin. His eyes were milky white, a sign that he was blind, while his head was shaved bald and decorated with tattoos. The man wore a simple orange robe, with a large necklace of beads around his neck, and simple sandals on his feet. "Let me show you what waits you, should I let you live," spoke the voice, raising one large hand and waving it, almost dismissively, causing the fabric of reality to tear itself asunder, a great split running through the air itself, with the the fragments of reality on either side pulling themselves apart, bending in on each other like a book being opened from the center. The line ran straight between Shingen and Rei, pulling them each into a different possible future, allowing them to gaze at what their lives might become.

In Shingen's future, he saw himself, crouched over a pair of bodies he did not recognize. A tall, blonde boy, and a lithe brown-haired girl. Both the bodies were mutilated, as if they had been part of some ritualistic sacrifice. With a heavy hard and shaking hands, Shingen watched himself sob over the bodies, before everything distorted in a gray haze, replaced with a new scene. Shingen stood before the gates of Sunagakure, across from a black-haired girl wearing a mask. She looked angry, and though the alternate-Shingen reached out his hand for her, she smacked it away, yelling incoherent words at him, as she exited through the village gates. Shingen watched himself fall to his knees, a sense of powerlessness creeping through his soul. Somehow, Shingen knew that the black-haired girl had killed the other two. Finally, the scene shifted again, and Shingen stood amidst the mutilated and severed bodyparts of the masked girl. Beside him stood Rei, and yet, Shingen felt no comfort. Only anger, distress, and fear. Shingen watched his alternate self, as the could-yet-come-to-be Shingen turned his gaze towards Rei, not filled with admiration, but with hatred.

Rei's own would be future was much simpler. A vision of herself, standing before Shingen. The alternate-Rei leaned forward, as if to place a quick kiss onto Shingen's lips, but she was rebuked, the vision of Shingen putting distance between himself and alternate-Rei. I know who you really are, he seemed to say, taking a battle stance as his eyes filled with hatred. The scene shifted, filling with fog that cleared to reveal alternate-Rei, sitting on the ground. In her lap, Shingen's head rested softly. His hair was messy, his breathing was erratic. His hand reached up to touch Rei's face, but he fell short, as his hand suddenly ceased moving, then fell limply at his side, all life leaving his blue eyes. Alternate-Rei's hand twitched. It was embedded through Shingen's chest, covered in blood. A single tear was all the Fox could spare, as her eyes swirled with a newfound pattern.

In a flicker, everything suddenly compressed. Like a book being suddenly closed, reality slammed itself back together, the tear mending, leaving the two shinobi standing exactly as they had been moments before. Shingen's posture slackened, and he fell to his knees, not having expected whatever had just happened, made even worse by a sudden emptiness inside his soul. He was not sure who he had watched die, but inside of his soul, he knew they were important to him. Even the masked girl. The chuunin panted, trying to catch his breath. He could feel a cold sweat on the back of his neck. Was it a genjutsu? It was certainly nothing like he had ever experienced before.

"What... What just happened?"

Rei did not attack immediately, even as the massive monk appeared, nearly twice her height and likely more than that where her overall bulk was concerned. He was blind, like the monk that had taught her those years ago, but could clearly see them in some fashion. The wind blew suddenly, and the girl attempted to drop back away from the monk’s gesture, but something pulled her in. Eyes wide, she was swept off her feet, the dirt scraping between her sole and the stone below it as the fissure in reality drew her to its depths. She turned, trying to find her balance midair, but whatever this technique was, it cushioned her like water, enveloping her vision in darkness. It wasn’t Genjutsu – she would easily see through it if it were. Trying to move was like being trapped in a pool, but she couldn’t see – she couldn’t see at all.

That was when the darkness seemed to sweep away like smoke, and she saw them. Perhaps, more accurately, she saw herself. She had that look on her face that she reserved for missions, that half-lidded, sleepy, seductive expression. Lips parted, and she leaned up and forward, obviously trying to calm a distressed Shingen. No, she thought to herself, and willed herself forward, to stop this, but she ran into some invisible force keeping her from the scene before her. Her fist thumped dully against the barrier even as Shingen pulled away, angry, hurt, the burden of his knowledge showing in his eyes. Rei’s own eyes stung as they watered. She knew what was going to happen next. She watched as that vulnerable, come-hither stare became so much carved marble, cold, unfeeling, and unconcerned. If a target could not be persuaded to go quietly into that good night, then she would drag them kicking and screaming. “No!” she screamed at herself, slamming against the barrier with all of her force then, wanting nothing more than to step between them. He loved her. It was this that allowed him to know her, that allowed them to come to conflict. Because she invited it. Because she was a selfish person who wanted to feel his love. She sobbed as the scene moved, streaks of wetness falling down her cheeks, the smell of copper and bile filling her senses. She knew how it ended. She didn’t need to look upon the wound. She didn’t need to see the regret and sadness etched across her own face. Self-loathing and rage filled her, and she banged upon the barrier again, screaming incoherently. She wanted to rip herself apart, to tear that possible reality asunder by first making that beautiful figure shatter like porcelain.

The vision blew away like smoke, and when she was dumped back out into her reality, face red, tears pouring from her, she realized a few things. Shingen had been pulled into that rift as well. Did he see the same thing? Did he know to start looking for clues in her? She trembled with mixed wrath and terror. Her eyes snapped to the monk, even as her companion innocently questioned whether or not what they were shown was an illusion. She knew the truth. It was not Genjutsu – she would have dismissed it. This was something else. “I’m going to kill you now,” she stated, her usually calm voice trembling. With a sudden gust of wind, Rei unleashed her inner power, coating herself in the trappings of the dragon as she flew through the space between them. A trail of silvery light followed her, tears glittering in the cold mountain air behind as her clawed hand sought to grasp the man’s throat.

It would be bad to let her get close, Kang thought to himself, taking a stance with his right arm outstretched. He could not see his opponent charging at him, but he could tell. In his mind's eye, he could see her. He could feel her presence, just like he could feel the presences of all living things in this world. It was all too much; they needed to be silenced. Pulling his arm back, Kang suddenly thrust his arm forward with a great force, causing shockwaves to ripple outwards form his blow and towards Rei. Fortunately, I have the advantage in range. The shockwaves would intercept her when she was about ten meters away from Kang. The old monk could hear the sound of stone shattering, as the ground beneath the fighters cracked, heaved, and shook from the force of the punch's shockwaves.

A tremble passed through Shingen's heart, as he felt his courage waver. He could not know what Rei had seen, or if she had seen the same thing at all. Regardless of whatever it was that she had seen, it had shaken her. Her voice quaked, and it spread an unease through the chuunin. What could she have seen that would have shaken her so? Who was this foe that had startled Shingen's invincible senpai? It was enough of a shock to stifle Shingen's brash confidence, but he forced himself to his feet anyway. He watched Rei launch forward, clad in crackling lightning, caught in the heat of battle, yet stilling looking every bit as brilliant as she had on that serene night in the snow.

A sense of anger rose in Shingen's gut, clutching at his heart with its long claws. Will you let him get away with scaring her like that? taunted the formless temptation, nothing more than a soft whisper in the back of Shingen's mind. The chuunin could feel it again; the familiar offering of great power. However, staring at Rei's back, with all of her dazzling radiance, he didn't feel the need to give himself over to the beast. The seal controls you. I control you, Shingen insisted, causing the voice in his head to sneer. I know my limits now. I'm taking some of your power, but it's not to hurt him. It's to protect her!

A cloak of blue erupted over Shingen's form. It danced and flickered like flame, with two tails flickering behind him. It was an unfortunately familiar feeling, but Shingen felt no fear. This much, under Kyousuke's teaching, he had learned to control. What came next gave the boy more reason for concern. It's now or never... he thought, clutching his hands together. Sensei, wish me luck.

A second coat of blue erupted around Shingen. Unlike the first, which was simply an aura resembling fire, this was a cloak of purest fire. It shimmered blue, white and silver, covering Shingen's body and overpowering the appearance of most of the Nibi's cloak. The two blue swishing tails were joined by seven silver tails, burning with intense heat. Atop Shingen's head, a helmet of blue flame formed, in the visage of a tiger mid-roar. An intense heat radiated from the boy's form, which caused a great pain and discomfort to Shingen himself, but he grit his teeth, unwilling to falter now of all times, as he recalled his sensei's words.

This process will feel, for you, similar to the feeling of the Niibi's chakra cloak.

Try it as you retreat, Shingen. Know that it will hurt, and will always hurt, but that you can control it—the pain and the fire—and that you can use it.

It'll hurt... but it won't consume me! I can control it!

Letting his training weights fall from his legs, Shingen dashed forward, to join the battle. He wouldn't let his senpai fight alone. The jinchuuriki dashed far to Kang's left, intending to flank the old monk while Rei drew most of his attention. He noticed the shockwaves hurtling outwards from Kang's fist, and Shingen moved a bit further to the left, giving additional room on the left flank if Rei decided to dodge to the left. Whatever she decided, Shingen aimed to close the distance between himself and the fallen monk, his flame-cloaked hand extended, his claws ready, to swipe at his foe.

"The dragon and the tiger, what unlikely allies!"

Eyes read the movement, the turning of the shoulder and the shifting of weight. She was too far away for a normal strike to hit her. That meant that he had some way of projecting his strength outward, which was, frankly, a principle of Taijutsu she’d never been able to explore. The sheer might of the man caused the mountain to rumble in protest as he launched his assault. I can’t get hit by that, came a flash of thought even as she pivoted on her left foot and pushed to the right, away from Shingen and allowing the wave of force to pass between herself and the other ninja. What did he show me? What was it that he...? Will I…? the girl wondered to herself, even as she recovered from her dodge and flitted forward again, having lost very little of her momentum even in the wide movement made to escape the forceful attack. Shingen’s attacking, too. If he saw, maybe he doesn’t know. Maybe… flew wild thoughts as she launched a ranged attack of her own, drawing the fingers of her right hand up to her left shoulder, then slashing diagonally downward to the right. A bolt of crackling lightning, bright white with a blue tinge, cut through the air at her opponent, the deadly electricity more than capable of ending a life.

It was the perfect herald for an angel of death such as she, hitai-ate glinting in the sun, breath frosting in front of her. The thin air made it harder to breathe, and the cold made it almost painful, but those were of no concern to Rei, who had made it her personal mission to end this man’s life. If what he showed was the future, it was very possible that it came to be only because of him, like a self-fulfilling prophecy. There was no way she’d let that stand. Another strike aimed for the throat – she would tear it out if she could.

The girl did well to dodge the shockwaves, dashing to the right and putting herself on the opposite side of the monk compared to the other ninja. Together, they were flanking the elderly man. But that's of no concern... he thought to himself, placing his hands together as he began to pray. Opening his mind's eye, he peered through the flimsy timeline of this reality. He had not the strength to travel through the various realities, but he still had power enough to rewind through his own. Space-time distorted around the monk's body, both Rei's lightning and Shingen's outstretched arm rushing forward through distorted space-time without ever actually getting closer to their targets. Kang flickered for a moment, before disappearing.

The monk reappeared a few feet away, behind where he stood. More specifically, he stood where he had been several seconds before, as he was winding up his shockwave-strike. If where once you don't succeed... he thought, turning his coiled arm away from Rei, and aiming it towards Shingen. Try, try again. Releasing his fist, Kang repeated the same shockwave attack from moments before, this time directing the attack not at Rei, but at Shingen. "Embrace your own destruction!"

Shingen's eyes widened in shock as his fist contorted in the distorted time-space. It didn't hurt, or feel particularly different. However, it was like it was slowed down. The further he tried to push forward, the further it felt like he went, without ever getting closer to his target. Then, in a moment, Kang disappeared, reappearing a few steps back. Infront of Shingen's blue eyes were a pair of lightning bolts, similarly distorted in their arc. This is bad! Shingen thought, as he rapidly began channeling chakra to his hand. If he made it in time, he might just be able to mitigate the damage!

With a sudden start, not unlike waking up, the spacial distortion suddenly ended, and the arcs of lightning violently clashed with Shingen's flame-clad hand. The chuunin let out a howl of pain, clutching his arm to his chest. A few drops of blood trickled to the ground, as a light trail of steam rose from his forearm. I made it... Just in time, he thought. The spacial contortion had afforded him enough time to successfully send his chakra to his hand to begin pre-healing his expected wound, and brace for impact, before the lightning had reached the target. It would hurt, but there wasn't any major or permanent damage.

Suddenly, however, the ground shook again, quite violently. Shingen turned his head to look towards Kang, only to be greeted by the sight of shockwaves leaving the monk's hand. He's fast! There's no way he had enough time to do that again... What's happening?

Shingen dashed hard to the left, wanting to keep some distance between himself and Rei, so that each of them could avoid the elemental side effects of the other's bodily chakra flow. Veering just out of the range of the shockwaves, Shingen struggled to maintain his balance. Even being so close to their epicenter nearly knocked him off of his feet, as the ground beneath him swayed and cracked.

"You're both fast," the monk complimented, placing a closed fist against an open palm and bowing. Ignoring the foe's comment, Shingen cast his glance momentarily at Rei, who stood across from him.

"Senpai, what's going on? Is this a genjutsu?"

More distortion, and yet more strangeness as the monk ceased to exist in the place he had previously been standing and instead existed in a different place altogether. The nature of the technique was unknown to her, but the repercussions seemed clear. A wince of mixed annoyance and concern crossed her face briefly as her lightning connected with Shingen. I can’t fight all-out with him here… she reminded herself. Compared to Shingen’s mad scramble to change direction, Rei’s simple pivot on her toe seemed to lose absolutely no speed – it was her nature to press the attack. The girl’s push from the floor caused the already cracked stone to shatter as she redirected force to propel her in a different direction, this time up, twisting her body up and over her companion by another time his height. She had to be unpredictable, to change her angle of attack – they couldn’t simply flank in the exact same way every time and expect anything to be different. Her feet touched the pillar this time, horizontal above Shingen, even as words were spoken. Shingen didn’t respond to the enemy, a point in his favor, but he asked a question that she didn’t have the time to answer. Is this how he was taught, or… she wondered. Perhaps the instantaneity of his sensei’s technique allowed time for dialogue about the situation. Perhaps it had simply been too long since she’d worked as a team.

“Attack!” she replied impatiently, even as she pushed away from the pillar and up, to the ceiling. She hadn’t meant to sound harsh, but she was already shaken, and regaining her composure after having it broken so thoroughly was a difficult task even for the disciplined ANBU. Again, the force of her step sent cracks spiderwebbing across the stone, weakening it. This time, her aim was not straight on for Kang. Her body turned again, and this time she was upside down, counting on her partner to press the attack from below. Honor probably dictated that she return his bow, but this was not a friendly duel. She was trying to end this man. Her left arm crossed, sending more lightning outward, back and away from all three of them, even as she pushed off of the ceiling, weakening the structure more and hurtling down toward the mysterious monk. She would hit at a time similar to her wayward lightning slamming into the second support pillar in the area, shattering it. The force of its destruction combined with the damage she’d already done compounded, bringing the area’s ceiling, made of brick and stone and tile like the rest of the temple, down upon all three of them. She could only trust that if Shingen could recover from having his spine shattered, he could deal with a few heavy rocks.

Combat frequently dictated that there was little time for pleasantries, and Rei seemed keen on pressing the attack. She attacked from on high, racing across the ceiling of the complex and sending arcs of lightning forward to begin bringing down the roof of the temple. I suppose she thinks I can heal through it, he thought, as he heeded the senior shinobi's call to keep up the pressure. Luckily for me, she's right. Dashing forward, Shingen extended his arm, aiming to smash it into the monk's torso. Even if he missed, that was likely fine. The heat radiating from Shingen was strong enough to severely burn and damage those who got within inches of him, even if he didn't actually touch them. The chuunin weaved between the first of the falling rocks, the milliseconds it took him to close in on his target feeling like minutes.

That was when it happened. A shining flash of golden light, followed by a red flicker and a demonic face that hovered behind the monk. With a thunderous howl, a great red fist appeared from nowhere, swatting Shingen away like a fly, the impact sending him smashing through the temple's stone walls, skidding to a halt on the ground outside. His ribs had been immediately shattered, his organs damaged and shredded, only beginning to restore themselves through a combination of the pre-healing of Yin Wound Destruction, which he had been preparing for the falling ceiling, and his Controlled Healing Method, which he proceeded to active when he was sent flying through the air. Instead of being dead ten times over, he was simply left wheezing on the ground, coughing up blood, in extreme pain, as his bones began to mend.

After the first strike, a barrage of red fists scattered outwards in all directions. Dozens of punches, each at incredible strength, including several sending great shockwaves hurtling outwards. The individual punches destroyed the falling debris, protecting the dark monk, while the shockwaves, which radiated outwards in all directions, destroyed the temple. Whereas Rei had taken down the ceiling, Kang's shockwaves turned the falling rubble to dust, while also dismantling the walls.

Pushing himself into a sitting position, Shingen didn't even need to wipe the blood off of his face. The heat from Okiru was so intense that the liquid bubbled away immediately. "Gheuk...!" He coughed, wincing as one of his ribs cracked back into place. In the moment of pain, his focus dwindled, and his blue flames extinguished, along with his chakra cloak, leaving a plain black-haired boy crouched in the dust. He clutched his side with his hand, trying to urge the healing process on faster as his hand glowed green. "Come on, come on...!" He was stuck now, laying prone until his injuries could heal, and he was quickly running out of time.

Glancing at the crippled youth, Kang was surprised that he had managed to survive at all. He wasn't as threatening as the girl was, but he was sturdy. He was like a cockroach. Pulling his fist back, feeling the strength gather in his arm, Kang aimed the punch at the boy, who was rendered immobile on the ground as he fixed his injuries. He let his fist surge forward like a rocket, sending a devastating shockwave towards the chuunin. "Will you risk your life to save your weak link?" Kang taunted.

Palm connected with Kang’s trapezius, the muscle cluster clenched in slender, Raiton-coated fingers and crushed inward, rending even the thick muscle of the monk and causing his arm to tense before ripping apart completely. Had he been a lesser man, he might not have been able to move it at all, but unknown to Rei, it would hardly faze him. Even so, the damage was present, and she felt satisfied at the feeling of her fingers tearing into flesh before turning her body and landing on her feet with a light tap. “Not good enough,” she breathed at his flashy technique, despite the fact that she could feel his power thrumming all around them, the temple shattering, the entire mountainside shaking. Dust and powdered stone swirled as they were exposed to the cold wind once more, whipping around them dangerously as the Uchiha balanced herself. She’d drawn blood, and she wanted more.

Each combatant took a moment to assess the damage around them, then. It was no more than a glance, but each of them saw the aftermath of the assault on Shingen. While Rei’s heart cried out for him, the massive man ahead of her seemed to see opportunity, lashing out with yet another strike. Her own arm whipped up into a block, pushing it off course and sending the wave of force away from the fallen ninja’s direction with a grunt of effort. Her right hand, clawed once more, reached in at the tall monk’s sensitive loins, intending on causing as much pain and injury as she possibly could with such a strike – she’d go for the throat, but it was at least a foot above her head, and they were very close. Tall bastard…

“I’ll ask the same,” she muttered, taunting him. Rei wasn’t normally like this – vengeful, certainly, but not insulting, not so…angry.

A sense of fear gripped Shingen's as the monk had prepared to deliver the finishing blow. A clawed hand gripped his heart, once more offering the sweet whispers of power and salvation, if he would but give himself to them. His mind went blank for a moment, as the last of his bones began to click into place, his organs finally reforming, as he considered giving in to the voice's demands.

However, the chuunin found himself saved. Once more, it was by the red-eyed senpai that he had come to know so well. She had already dealt one blow to the massive monk's back, which she followed by knocking the monk's strike off-course, sending the shockwaves hurtling into the sky, instead of at Shingen. For a moment, the Mangetsu boy forgot to breathe, he had been so terrified. Pushing himself onto his feet, Shingen reignited the blue flames around his body, feeling the pain run through his body once again, though he grit his teeth and dealt with it.

Meanwhile, Kang grunted as he quarreled with the Uchiha girl. Despite her small size, she was quite strong. It was no simple feat to damage him, let alone deflect one of his strikes. He was growing quickly irritated. Why would these two not simply accept the end of their suffering? Refocusing himself, he allowed for reality to tear itself asunder, as time around him slowed, and Kang's wound vanished, reversing three seconds in time to a period before he had been wounded. As he did so, he kicked his foot downwards, attempting to swipe Rei's legs out from under her, while bringing his own hand down at her right hand, to disrupt her strike at his loins. Then, provided the attacks were successfully intercepted, he would leap backwards, attempting to put some space between himself and his two opponents. Having expended all of his uses of the Koi no Myo'o, he suddenly preferred to fight at a distance. Close-range fighting wouldn't likely work against someone who had forced him to rewind time twice already.

Dashing a few steps to the right, Shingen took up a position on Kang's right flank, leaving Rei to take the left flank. They stood amid the rubble of the collapsed temple now, on the exposed mountain-side. The sky above them was eerily beautiful, speckled with white clouds, as if the world was completely unaware of the vicious life-and-death battle that raged below.

He's out of my league, but it seems like senpai can hit him... In that case, I'll provide the distraction!

Glancing at Rei, Shingen gave her a slight nod before dashing forward. He veered left, approaching Kang from the center. Shingen's tails of flame unfurled, and blue fire extended outwards from his body in all directions. It was bright, incredibly so, and its heat was enough that it was quite unpleasant even from several feet away. Dashing forward, Shingen didn't really intend to try and land a strike on Kang, he just needed to create the opportunity for Rei to do so. She was small enough, and Shingen's flames large enough, that she would easily be able to hide behind them. Hopefully, that would be enough on its own to give her the opportunity to strike.

And if not, Shingen thought, already channeling chakra to his midsection, then she can just hit me, too. A punch right through me and into the enemy. He wouldn't see it coming, and I should be able to heal through it afterwards. Probably...

The anticipation of coating her hand in the man’s blood gave Rei a rush that she’d later admonish herself for. In the moment, however, she leaned into her strike, eager and expecting his other arm to hang, useless. She forgot for that brief moment that this was a monk, much like the one who had taught her. Would that wound have stopped her, in the height of her determination? Unlikely. The body had a way of willing itself to work, even if some of the pieces were broken, and she probably would have been able to continue fighting under this condition. As such, it shouldn’t have been a surprise when her arm stung from a blocking blow. Her eyes snapped up to his shoulder again, and then widened in surprise. It were as though there had been no damage at all. Is that what he can do? Manipulate time itself? Does that mean what I saw…? she wondered to herself, even as she felt her legs swept. She fell as she was taught, not straight down but instead twisting to roll up, but the floor wasn’t straight anymore. She grunted as her head, protected by her technique but not impervious to harm, cracked against an uneven stone.

Her vision went white and ears began ringing for a moment as she turned on her back, shaking her head as hair laid out in a pool around her, dark against the porcelain of her skin and the light grey of the stone. She groaned, trying to remember the last time she’d been put on her back against her will as she stared at the blue sky. The faint smell of food waste and sewage mixed with wet stone crossed her senses, then. Where was she? It passed as quickly as it came, however, and the fresh mountain air crashed over her with a chilling sensation. At some point, Rei had popped up to her feet, and her eyes twitched a look over at Shingen, who nodded, then dashed away. Her steps followed his, and she drafted behind him. It wasn’t precisely in the plan, but a certain memory, not really remembered but instead more like a feeling of déjà vu, took her then. Their speeds were matched, but Shingen was taking all of the air resistance, and the fire was taking yet more of the friction around him away. She was unafraid of his flame, and could get closer than most due to the protection of her own technique – and the unwavering ability to accept being burnt if her gamble proved so dangerous.

It was certainly one thing to anticipate the figure surrounded by roaring blue fire. It was quite another to anticipate the smaller form slingshotting around him, quicker due to the lack of air resistance, and then suddenly sliding to her knees. The thick fabric of her uniform slid across the rubble, tearing in more than one place as Rei aimed a hammer fist at the side of Kang’s knee. Her intent was to shatter, but the effect was more likely to dislocate should it hit. Directly after her pass on the left, the girl popped up with an extension of her legs, higher than most would be able to accomplish. A simple spin had her foot aimed to plant into Kang’s back and send him in towards Shingen – whom she hoped had some ability to capitalize. It wasn’t exactly the plan he imagined, but some muscle memory had taken her.

The plan hadn't developed exactly as Shingen might have foreseen, but things in battle rarely tended to go exactly as planned. Rei had used his flames as a successful distraction, and dashed around to Kang's side, delivering a would-be devastating blow to his leg. Normally, a blow from someone of Rei's strength would have shattered the bone outright, but their foe was tough. He gave a grunt, sinking down slightly onto one knee, as Rei immediately followed up with a kick to his back, pushing him forward. The kick sent the man hurtling into Shingen, who had no real individual strike that would have been more powerful than the technique he was already using. So, instead of punching, the chuunin instead opened his arms wide, letting the massive man topple into him, as Shingen wrapped his arms around the man's arms, keeping a firm grasp on him as the blue flames immediately began to sear at the man's flesh. A sickening smell of melting skin and loud screams filled the serene mountain top, as Shingen clutched at the dying man's frame until the last bits of life had been burnt out of him, at which time, Shingen released the mutilated body.

Taking a few steps away from the burnt corpse, Shingen let the fire flicker out of existence. The exhaustion hit him all at once, and he slumped forward, stumbling but managing to stay upright. He felt nauseous. He had never killed a man in such a way before, and it was frankly unpleasant. He was sure he would hear those pained screams in many unpleasant dreams to come. Casting a blue-eyed glance at his senpai, Shingen took a few wobbly steps towards her.

"Are you alright, senpai? I saw he landed a hit. I can heal you if you're hurt," he offered, giving her a smile twinged with both pain and sadness. It was the best he could do to keep a fake smile on his face after such a gruesome battle. His confession of love only minutes before had already been forgotten. "He certainly punched hard, huh?"
