For all of Rei's skill at reading situations, people, and emotions, she had not seen this particular topic coming. Perhaps that wasn't fair to say. It wasn't that Rei did not see it, it was that her want to avoid the subject blinded her to the possibility of it, made her turn away from the subject that, when one thought about it, seemed obvious. She couldn't help her reaction, though subtle, a pause in her step almost imperceptible. Never look back. Can I really keep that philosophy now? Can I ignore the past to forge the future? she asked herself, silent for a long moment as they walked. She didn't really respond to Sajin for several steps. It wasn't a 'no', but neither had she said 'yes'. The quiet between them slowly grew heavier, and perhaps for a moment the male had started to think that maybe she'd remain quiet when, finally, Rei spoke.

"There's a lot I could tell you about Shingen," she said. "He was a brave, kind young man with dreams greater than he could contain," Rei continued, swallowing. "He was compassionate, fiercely protective of his loved ones, and was plain with his wants and thoughts. He detested lies, and being deceived was probably the worst of the sins I committed against him, in his eyes." She fell silent again, a coppery taste in her mouth, the ghostly feeling of yielding flesh between her fingers taunting her. "I wanted him," she allowed, her heart suddenly thumping in her chest. "Everything about him. I wanted his purity, I wanted his righteousness, I wanted his shining optimism for myself. I wanted to wrap myself in his blanket of warmth and sun so badly," came her next words, spilling from her lips as though a dam had broken. Wetness slid down her cheeks, and she furiously wiped it away. "Ah... sorry. Did you have any specific questions?"

He immediately regretted his decision to ask. The image of a cat came to mind with the words 'Curiosity' and 'Killed' flashing like police lights. Just as he was about to open his mouth and tell her to forget he asked his jaw was snapped shut as she began. From the first word he could tell this wasn't a simple sore spot. This was akin to a festering wound. What she said about him wasn't surprising though. Shikaji had similar qualities, if not a little less bright than his Suna half had been. The detest for lies was something the two halves of his friend shared though and it was nice to know that it wasn't as if the two were entirely different people. He had been worried once Shikaji got his memories of his soul back that their friendship would be at risk. He supposed that worry had been laid to rest back at Tanzaku Town but here he was, still worried. If the conversation hadn't been so serious he would chastise himself.

Her words cut him deeply. They echoed of a hurt he could scant imagine. She composed herself quickly though and he had to give her respect in that aspect. "No...I don't think I need to know anything more. That was more than enough, thank you." Aware that he had perhaps brought up some of the worst moments of her life, Sajin quickly attempted to remedy the situation as best he could.

"Say, what's your favorite thing in the world? Mine is the smell of fresh meat hitting the barbecue or how far I can see when I get real big. Things get put into perspective when you're the size of like, three volleyball courts."

The worst part was that she wanted to say more. The same want that kept drawing her back to Shingen in the first place tugged at her, pulling her into that space of black and white memory, a still photograph of perfection in the snow. It was always the same, would perhaps always be the same, with Shingen's memory. The hedgehog's dilemma, her mother had once called it, describing the standoffishness of her early Genin days. They wanted to be close, but being close only hurt. Still, being alone was worse, and so they continued to hurt one another. Still, composed once more, she wouldn't toss that burden on Sajin any further. To have someone so emotional nearby and have no idea how to comfort them was a horrible thing. The fact that he cared enough to change the subject was already enough, for her.

"My favorite thing... well, it's probably snow," she replied. "When it's peacefully falling, and there's no wind, just those sparkling snowflakes spinning down out of the sky, piling up, covering everything in white..." she continued, remembering the snow in Kumogakure no Sato, high on the mountain. Her lips split in a small smile. Shingen could make it snow, she thought to herself, and as they rounded over a hill, the sight of Sodairama's back was visible once more. He could make my favorite thing happen. I love you, too, Sodai, but you're not really him, her inner monologue continued. "I even like the way that snow smells - fresh, wet, and so cold it burns your lungs. I guess if I had another favorite..." she continued, then grinned, remembering another thing entirely. "Smoked salmon sashimi. They make it taste so good in Kirigakure!"

Snow. Come to think of it the Akimichi couldn't remember seeing the stuff before, at least not with his own eyes. He hadn't traveled much outside of the village other than going on missions and those rarely took place during the winter times. He hadn't been sent to lands where snow was frequent either. The way that Rei explained it however he suddenly felt like he was missing out and had been his entire life. The next favorite thing of hers he understood much better and in fact turned around nearly immediately. Walking backwards so as to not stop their progress, his eyes widened.

"I've always heard how good the sushi was in Kirigakure. Is it true? The fish back in Konoha wasn't bad but the barbecue was miles better, trust me, I've literally eaten miles of the stuff." He grinned widely, all teeth, and laughed at his little, or not so little, joke. "When we're done in Sunagakure we're supposed to be heading to the Land of Waves right? Maybe we can take a stop to get some of that sashimi, my treat! And who knows, I heard it snows there sometimes too, we might get a two for one deal." He hoped as much, not only for his own experience but part of him thought that Rei could really use that kind of thing right about now.

He stretched out his arms, in a quite literal sense, the limbs moving far beyond what was normal. He gave the extended extremities an odd glance before flexing his fingers some distance away. "Man, I can't even imagine what I'll be able to do with this body once I get control over it. Have you had any extreme surgeries or modifications done to you? I figure if you were so good at working on me you have to have some kind of experience with the matter yeah?"

Sajin turned to face her as they walked, his natural balance and spatial awareness more than good enough to just walk backward. Rei gave a soft laugh at the idea that he'd eaten actual miles of barbecue, and in fact it wasn't really all that difficult to imagine. She, herself, had been quite voracious at times after training or when recovering from missions - the woman could only imagine how her companion might put it away. "The last time I was there, the Mizukage welcomed me with all the sushi I could eat. I'll admit... I was tempted to stay a bit and vacation, but that was the night I killed Naitome," she stated, the same as if she'd said 'I had to go on a date'. While she was reserved about death and killing, it seemed there were some she felt deserved it more than others, and when speaking of them she could be as casual as someone sharing some minor detail of their day that delayed or hurried them. "So... sticking around felt like it would require a lot more maneuvering than simply making them think I left, then doing as I needed. Anyway the sashimi there is incredible, I mean they basically catch it, clean it, take it to the table," she continued. "We'll definitely have to make the most of it next time. Snow would just be icing on the cake." Her gluttonous recounting of the meal she'd partaken of and her want of more had the girl's mouth watering. She swallowed and tucked the memory away as he stretched.

Rei shook her head. "I've never had any major surgeries or modifications, being honest," she admitted, feeling a little embarrassed at having done something so obviously invasive without having experienced the consequences for herself. "Continuing with that honesty, while I understand the theory and have some vague, fuzzy memory of operating on others, healing their wounds, and working in a hospital, I was not trained in advanced medical techniques by Konoha. No one else seems to have acknowledged or understood it, but..." she winced a bit, here, obviously uncomfortable with really saying this much, "... I believe that our world was touched by something, a little over a year ago, around the time of the Chuunin Exams. It changed us, some of us drastically - I noted a similar change in Shin-kun, even, though he didn't seem to notice. It was like most people didn't even know it happened." It was hard to not feel as though she were coming off as insane. "I don't know why I noticed it beyond others, or if anyone else noticed, or if I'm just actually touched in the head. I can do things I should have no business doing, and know things I should have no business knowing, though, so it feels real."

"Hmm." He mused as the Uchiha mentioned that before him she had no real experience with surgeries or modifications. That would be a lot more disconcerting if he didn't already have a new elastic bod, but it wasn't like he had much choice. It was either the surgery worked or he was done as a shinobi. Lucky him that it worked. He was going to mention something about how cool it was to have met the Mizukage and more importantly how fresh she made the sashimi sound when she began talking about the world being touched. The concept was admittedly very strange and he hoped that Earthmichi at least gave consent first.

He had to file himself into the category of didn't notice, a year ago during the Exams he and Shikaji were simply doing their competitions and working. The only strangeness that occurred was the whole two halves to a whole trick the Nara-now-also-Senju pulled. The way that Rei spoke of it however, he knew that the ordeal meant a lot to the woman. Retracting his arms to their normal, but still long, lengths he shrugged his shoulders. "Well, I can't say I know what you're talking about. I didn't feel anything around that time but you haven't lied to me yet, not willingly or to my knowledge at least, so I have little reason to think you'd start now. Once we get all this Abyss stuff settled what do you say the three of us try and find out what happened? If the world shifted or something and I didn't notice well I'd like to know what went down. Maybe I could spout water or shoot lightning back then and now I just kick dirt and rocks around. I don't like not knowing things about myself, whether it was some cosmic event or otherwise."

Relief caused the little tingles of doubt and worry that she sounded like a crazy person to slowly wither away. At the very least, he didn't think she was lying, and being honest - it was a mystery she'd been far too busy for, and then had promptly made herself forget about, but now that she had what seemed like free time, her mind traveled back to that. It was so strange, to realize what had happened and not be able to explain it, and to know that it had affected seemingly oblivious, countless others. "I'd like that. I get a strange sense of foreboding whenever I think about it, like I know something I shouldn't - furthermore, it feels like whatever happened was herald of something much worse in our world than a harmless shifting of reality," she replied, nodding. "If you can call reality shifts harmless," Rei amended, nervously chewing on a plush lip. Her first experience with abilities like that had predicted the murder of Shingen. The prediction didn't necessarily make the connection true, but looking back, collating the memory of seeing and the memory of being, she realized that there were some terrible coincidences. That strange, muted screaming, the sound of someone beating on glass underwater. She hadn't recognized them then, or perhaps she might have stopped, but they were the mirror of her actions that day on the mountain, peering into the future. "Anything else you might like to do, or might like to know? If I can help, I will," she stated earnestly, her sapphire gaze peeking up at him from under the cowl of her cloak with intent.

It was nice to do nice things, who could've guessed. While he had meant what he said about finding out what happened hearing Rei's response made him want to do it more. Seemed a lot of things had been that way lately. "Reality shifts all the time I'm sure. I mean over the last year how many people changed entirely? All these new elements, physical attributes suddenly different, new and lost special abilities. What is time but a boat for shifting realities?" He blinked after his little spiel and laughed nervously, hoping that now he wasn't the one who sounded crazy.

Her sapphire gaze locked on him and he met it with his own brown eyes for a brief moment. He could press more about Shingen. He could ask what she stood for and what she truly wanted out of the Abyss. He could ask what she wanted in Suna or her plans to make amends with Kiri and Kemuri. He could ask those things, but he didn't. Instead he smiled and turned back around to face Sodai's back.

"Unless there's anything you think I need to learn before we get to Suna I can't think of much. I'm not entirely sure what I don't know, y'know? I always thought ignorance was bliss but man I'm finding out that was a pretty bad stance on things."

She nodded, but Sajin's response was actually more disturbing than she'd really thought. All the time. Did I only notice the once? she wondered. Although, I'm sure it's explicable. If he noticed the change, and others noticed the change, then... doesn't that mean it happened through some natural way? Still, Rei couldn't say with certainty that the phenomenon she described was different from those that Sajin described, because she wouldn't be aware of it if it were truly a spatial or dimensional alteration. It was frustrating to come upon a knot of a problem like this and only be aware of one end of the string. She could pull and prod and pry, but without a clear end and beginning, it was hopelessly stuck.

"Ignorance can simulate a kind of happiness," Rei replied, stepping up to speak at his side rather than his back. "I've been ignorant of a lot in life, and it at least kept me from pain, at the time," the woman continued, still stepping lightly next to his long strides. Though it wasn't exactly bliss, her inner voice supplied. "Knowledge can, in time, bring a more complete happiness, I think. That isn't to say there won't be unknown unknowns. Things that you don't know that you don't know. Seeking knowledge can be dangerous, to oneself or to another, but I am not sure if I've ever reached a conclusion that says it is wrong. Even if someone learns something dangerous, it is ultimately up to the decision in how that knowledge is used that determines if it is wrong or right." She had the sort of long, drawn-out manner of speaking that suggested she was working things out as she said them, not lecturing but simply thinking out loud. "So, I suppose, if you want to change that stance, I'd suggest to seek out knowledge. Ask. Be curious. Wonder why things work. Wonder why people work - not just physically, but mentally. Beyond just wondering, try to figure it out. I think you're already doing a pretty good job at it just in admitting being at a loss," she stated. A smile kept her lips curled slightly as she spoke, and it could be heard in her voice. She didn't realize how different it felt without a mask. Just talking to someone, sharing her thoughts and speaking her mind, being around a friend... when she thought of the subdued way in which she spoke and the awkwardness of her social affairs in Konohagakure, even in her early interactions with Shingen, it never held this sort of freedom. She had always been careful not to put on any act - so careful, in fact, that she really thought the melancholy girl that responded in near-monotone to most every situation was the real her. Perhaps it was. Perhaps her time as Junko had really changed her, or perhaps it was just the change in environment, in job description. I'm unemployed, she thought for a moment, and for some reason, Rei found that incredibly funny. A soft giggle erupted from her that turned into a short fit of laughs. Assuming her sudden outburst had drawn a common reaction, she looked up from where she had previously bent slightly in mirth, and grinned at Sajin. "Sajin, I just realized... we're unemployed! Jobless! NEETs!" Saying it aloud seemed to revive her amusement at the situation, and she laughed again, a little harder this time.

Skimming over the talks of boats and shifting, Rei instead stepped to his side to speak of ignorance and knowledge. He couldn't help but nod with a small shrug of his shoulders when she mentioned the simulation of happiness. He had once thought himself happy not knowing things but now he was coming to find that not knowing things about himself was a pretty frustrating position to be put in. His nod and shrug combo ceased when she brought the topic to herself and how her ignorance had staved off pain for at least a little while. She decided to go way deep in some philosophizing and he did his best to keep up. At bare minimum he grasped the concept of what she was saying if not the nuance in which she said it. She urged him on to ask questions and seek answers and he screwed his face up in response. What questions should he ask for things he didn't know? How could he seek out the unknown unknown as she had put it?

As he contemplated these things his train of thought was derailed by the surprising sound of giggling that led into a full, but short, fit of laughter. Straightening out his face he at first thought that something with his new body had gone wrong and he quickly looked himself over, his expression one of "Is there something on my face?" but applied to one's whole self. She then looked up to him and stated the reason she was laughing. Stopping his inspection he stared blankly back at her blinking in slow intervals. He hadn't thought of that. For the first time in his life he didn't have a job or responsibility, the entire idea made him laugh with her.

"You're right! You're absolutely right! Wow, it feels great, why didn't I do this before?" His own laugh escalated with hers as the two seemed to revel in their new NEET existence.

After the initial hullabaloo died down he was left thinking of what she said earlier though, about asking questions and being curious. "Alright, well stance change is go. Is there anything else that you've learned from our old village or another that you think would do me well? I can't shake the feeling that Sunagakure won't be as easy as just saying hi to Shikaji's former students and walking out with them. Consider me a sponge from now on, anything you teach I'll just get real soapy with."

The girl grinned in the wake of her infectious laughter, wiping a finger at the corner of one eye where it had watered slightly, this time with the feeling of joy. This really is different... she mused, pleased with the change. At the final question, of anything she felt he should know, Rei paused. There are a few techniques that have been considered universally powerful in almost every situation. It wouldn't hurt for him to know them. Maybe Soudai will want to learn, too, she thought to herself, tapping her chin with one finger. "When we sit down to rest next, there are some techniques I could show you. I will warn that they're not the kind that one usually learns without trouble, though," she stated. The Uchiha didn't think that adversity or difficulty in learning was going to deter Sajin, however. He was the capable sort who, even if he couldn't do something right the first time, would practice until he could.

And that was that. From then on Sajin would be her disciple. Of all the sensei's a man could random into, Rei seemed a step above the rest. "Trouble, schmouble, stuff like that never stopped me before and I'll be danged if I let it stop me now." He said with a wry smile. The conversation had seemed to come to an end though and the two would likely speed up to catch up to Sodai. As the three continued their trip to the Land of Wind, Sajin found himself pushing softly against a tall, tall gate.
