Ayane had finally arrived at the house that had been recommended her by the young medic. In front of the building a small, wooden sign was placed to the left of the doorway, proclaiming it as Akina's Shelter. Ayane walked up the steps to the door, her right hand sliding along a sandstone stair rail. She knocked thrice on the door, waited a moment. An older looking woman, maybe fifty-five in age, opened it and gave Ayane a look. Her smile was wanting - Ayane supposed that there was no upside to a girl arriving, even if it helped cure an old woman of her loneliness.

They introduced themselves, and Ayane was shown around. Akina had three rooms, besides her own - with Ayane here now, two were occupied. The other girl was named Tsuki, and rarely left her room. She was an aspiring writer, who came here to stay after her parents were killed many years ago. The old lady enlisted Ayane in cooking breakfast, and the girl acquiesced gladly. She hadn't really eaten since she had returned from the desert. It was good food, and Akina seemed seriously interested in Ayane's predicament. She was never a shinobi, herself, but her husband had been one before he died. After breakfast and commiseration, Ayane was shown to her room. She thanked Akina, and meant it.

Sleep took her quickly. It had been a long time since she had lain in a real bed.

Travelling openly through the streets was something that the Kazekage rarely did, even in his youth. He knew every in and out of the village—of course, as the leader of every shinobi and civilian that called the place home as he did, he had to—but it was not for having frequented the bars, alleys, shops, and homes. He knew them because he watched over them day and night. When he was not looking over the village that he guarded, he had ensured that others did so for him. As a result, he knew not only the village in a manner that most would not, but he often knew when people would be in certain places, how long it would someone to get somewhere, and if people were not where they were supposed to be.

Standing atop the roof of a building overlooking a certain halfway house, he knew that Ayane was not there yet, but that she soon would be. If she wasn't, she'd likely have taken off in the direction of the yelling of the girl he assumed to be the Jashinist. Another of the four clones had already taken off in that direction, though, so he had no cause to leave yet.

Waiting atop the roof, he watched with interest the crowd of others below. None of them were the genin that he had taken an interest in, but he was sure that the set of them would be soon found. With Ayane returned, he would finally be able to set into motion several of his plans for the younger generation. Shingen in particular would be interested in the girl, he knew, but he still had his doubts about the youth's reliability.

All the same, when Ayane arrived, as he knew she would, she knocked on the door of the building. He waited for her to make her introductions, eat a meal, and be left alone before he moved to greet her. He was certain that she was as tired as Tori had been. Tōton Jutsu made his approach easy and uninterrupted, as he followed behind one of the pair of the villages ANBU that he had brought with him to the door. This particular one, a member of the Origami family named Tazaemon, was unmasked at the moment. The other remained masked, and perched himself above the Kazekage and his partner in one of the higher buildings.

Tazaemon knocked for him, though quietly. The older woman opened the door, greeting the man she saw with a smile. Though she did not know him, only a few hushed words needed to be uttered for her to open the door and step aside. Once the door was closed, the Kazekage revealed himself. Though his appearance would be surprising to the woman, he knew that she would understand why he had chosen secrecy to seek out the girl as she stood uncomfortable and somewhat afraid next to the door.

"He will explain," Kyōsuke said, calmly nodding to Tazaemon, "I will be in the other room."

With no more than one short line to the owner of the home, he moved to the door of Ayane's room, opened it silently, and entered. Inside, he found a chair, turned it to face the bed that Ayane had passed out in, sat himself in it, and waited. He would be in little hurry until it was later in the day, and was determined to remain there until she woke.

"For now, you may rest, but you'll soon have to wake and face your demons like the rest of us.

Ayane dreamed of Shingen. The youth was caught under a mound of sand, constricting in. Fast, when he so chose, but speed couldn't help him. ”Do it!” What had been an impulse earlier was now a savage roar, the command of a Daimyo that did not tolerate disloyalty. Shingen pleaded, the Voice there for him to hear as well.

”N-No!” It was a feeble response, and she knew it. So did the voice, and it laughed. She felt the murderous intent from Shingen - it grew in intensity with the disembodied laughter. ”Do it, girl. If you don’t, I will.” Ayane tried desperately to remove the sand from Shingen, but the sand was sluggish, like when punching someone in a dream. It came off in small clumps, but she knew it wasn't going to be enough. The Voice growled, the sand began to constrict in on Shingen, and Ayane screamed.

She sat up quickly, breathing heavily, her eyes wide open and wild. She sat there for a moment before she caught something to her side. Shaking already from the dream, she turned her head and looked. The man was huge, easily six and a half feet, and he stared at her with mismatched eyes. Very pale, he was, an oddity in a land as sunny as theirs - and he accentuated it with a black and blue kimono, as well as the cap of the Kazekage.

And so it was. She could feel the killing intent from the man, and she scooted back so her back was against the wall, and faced the Kage. The fear of the dream passed - it was replaced by fear of this man in front of her. This man was real, unlike her dream, and he had control over both her destiny, as well as her life.

She decided to play it as cool as her racing heart allowed. ”G-Good morning Kazekage-sama. I didn’t expect to wake up to you.”

She did not appear to sleep well, and the Kazekage could not blame her. He seemed to have that effect on people, though he suspected that he was not the cause. She was burdened with as much as he was, he knew. In different ways to be sure, but to her, her burdens would seem overwhelming. He sighed, and Ayane snapped straight up in the bed.

Looking over her, he noted her breath, her eyes, and the sweat that glistened along her brow in the daylight that peeked through the shades that covered the room's windows. It took her only a moment to take note of him as well. She moved away from him—again, to be expected—and seemed to shrink into herself. He felt a twinge of guilt at that; was finding comfort in herself or the demon preferable to being close to him? All the same, both he and she had little choice in the matter anymore.

"G-Good morning Kazekage-sama. I didn't expect to wake up to you."

"I should hope not. Were I you, I'd have expected to meet me at the gates. Or when you went to seek out your clan. Or when you went to the Sandcastle. I apologise for that. I have been busy," he kneaded his left hand with his right, though whether from anxiety or impatience even he did not know, "but I am here now. I trust that your sojourn went well. You'll understand that we'll have to establish an understanding, between you and I, about your place here."

Ayane nodded at the Kage’s words - they were true enough. He was fidgeting, though, and that made her all the more nervous. Ayane continued to tremble as the Kazekage spoke of reaching an understanding. She wanted to move then, to get up and run away before he slew her for her treachery, or whatever else had befallen her parents. But she was rooted in place by fear, and as his words ended, and silence filled the void, nothing happened. She stole a glance at him, he showed no signs of moving. ”My sojourn went w-well, yes. I… learned a lot.” She moved her eyes to meet his, her fear-wracked body screaming against it. He still looked like murder writ large, the embodiment of shinobi ideals - ruthless, cunning, himself unafraid of the horror he played for others.

”I’m n-not sure what you mean, Kazekage-s-sama. W-what k-kind of understanding? About w-what?” She wanted to grab a kunai and stab herself through the knee - she had faced the full fury of the desert, yet she could hardly speak to this one man.

The girl nodded, acting more or less as he had expected; trembling, any glances in his direction fleeting, she had displayed all of what he'd expect of an average girl her age. He had not thought that she would be as verbally responsive, though.

"My sojourn went w-well, yes. I… learned a lot." She managed to look at him properly then, giving him his first good look at the girl since she had wandered into the desert. Her hair seemed longer now, but her eyes were still green, still full of fear, and betraying of an inner sense of feeling out of place. Despite that, she managed to maintain direct eye contact. "I’m n-not sure what you mean, Kazekage-s-sama. W-what k-kind of understanding? About w-what?" Somewhere deep inside him, he felt the distinct rumble of the demon fox's laugh. He put it to no more than his imagination.

"I'm sure that you learned a lot while you were away, but I promise you that you will learn more here," his right hand, splitting from the left, motioned across the room, "at home, than you could ever imagine. Away, there are many and more things to keep count of; dangers to you, to your family, to your country, in all the forms they come. These things can take any shape," his left hand raised to his breast, a single finger pointing at his heart, "and most of them will seek to twist who you are. This is especially easy for those dangers most close to us, who come to us when we do not know who we are yet. These dangers take the faces of things like that which we seek to protect: our countrymen, our friends, our family, or our parents."

His gaze, which had before simply met her own, looking over or past her, seemed to focus then, as if to look through her.

"Though it is hard to understand now, know that I will never mean to harm you. I have never. I carry with me the burdens of what I have to and have had to do every moment of every day. Often, I carry them with me into the night, as I imagine you do. You and I are alike in many ways, you see. That is why I know that it is important for us to understand the desires of one another. I desire to make certain that I protect the village. It is my family. It is how I know who I am." He paused, to give the girl a moment to think. As he did so, his eyes fell out of focus once again. "I won't ask you if you know who you are yet. Even should you think that you do, in a month's time, who you think you are is like to change. Instead, I will ask this: who do you want to be?"

His forearms came to rest on his knees as he motioned towards the door with a shoulder and a glance.

"Because out there—where the dangers lie—they won't ask. They will never stop trying to take or to change what you do or don't know, nor will they always be out there."

Ayane wasn't prepared for what the Kazekage had to say. He started off assuring her that while she had learned valuable things in the desert, there were more lessons to learn at home. Ayane’s eyes narrowed and her mouth turned down into a confused frown. He wasn't irritated, or angry, or accusing her of treason, like she had expected. Instead, if Ayane hadn't known any better, she would've said he was anxious. The thought of the Kazekage anxious left her feeling uneasy, and she pushed that thought out of her mind. He spoke of threats not just to her physical being, but who she was, as well. He swore he never intended to harm her, or anyone else close to her. And more, so much more.

Most importantly, he posed a question: who did she want to be? He said knowing that was the only way to defend herself against those enemies that would try to twist her, though she did not know who he meant. Or how they would do that. Her jaw clenched during the Kazekage’s final words, that there would be dangers from inside her. What is he talking about? Whatever he meant, it didn’t matter. He had given her a one month time frame, roughly, before she’d know. But know what?

As she spoke in response, she lost some of her fear. Her hands shook, but it was no longer the racking tremble that had affected her before. ”I want to be a killer.” It was, she thought, the hardest thing to want to be. But it was not something she could shy away from, if she wanted to be a shinobi. The scorpion did not shy away from the final strike, when it was time; she could ill afford to, either.

”I want to be ruthless.” The mantis that stalked the desert did not listen for mercy. They did not hesitate when it came time to strike. ”I want to leave behind crying, orphaned children. I want to be the sands of the desert.”

And yet, there were other desert creatures - though she had not looked at them in such a light, until her time in the desert. These were people, who managed to tame the desert as well as any insect, if not better. To her, people were unique. They had individual prowess, much like the insects she so admired. But they also had something more, a network of friends. And she had missed that, alone, playing insect in the desert. Already she had met two individuals, Shingen and that medic girl, who seemed good.”I want to be a good friend. Generous to those in the village. A good lover. I want to be a shoulder to cry on if I’m needed. Reliable.”

During her sojourn, she had made her way out to the great glass plateau. Her father had always told her stories of the Dondergod, one of the greatest shinobi from his homeland. And of course everyone knew of Shinji, who had once owned the world. Supposedly they had fought in the desert, and the glass oddity was what had remained. She had stood at the base of it, staring up in wonderment, dumbfounded by the power required to alter the earth itself. Whatever forces of nature they were, she wanted to be.

”I want to be a Kami.”

Her jaw clenched as he finished, but she did not seem to hesitate to find her voice in reply. As she spoke, she seemed steel herself. She still shook, but with much less force than she had been.

"I want to be a killer. I want to be ruthless. I want to leave behind crying, orphaned children. I want to be the sands of the desert. I want to be a good friend. Generous to those in the village. A good lover. I want to be a shoulder to cry on if I’m needed. Reliable." Her eyes seemed to glass over for a moment. "I want to be a Kami." She paused, apparently still in thought, but had no need to say anything more for Kyōsuke to understand her.

"I'm staring into a slightly-warped mirror," Kyōsuke realised, welling with mixed emotions. "The girl doesn't and might never know what she means to me, but I have somehow managed to carve myself from what she had been. Satoru, is this what you wanted from Tori, truly?" The combined amazement and disgust he felt of her confession to her desires was followed promptly by both guilt and a strange giddiness. The Kazekage's eyes came back into focus on the girl who was so much like him. "Old man, this is what I bought with your life. Would it please you that she is so much like I am? Would you revile me for it? I know what you would expect me to do, but I can only hope that I can bear it." He stood, to her it would seem suddenly, and turned to face the door.

The room, being on the first floor of a building among many other tall buildings, only caught the edge of the sun’s mid-day light to begin with. Having not turned on any of the room’s lights, everything in the room cast a long shadow away from the windows, towards the door. In this half-light, turned toward the shadow, the Kazekage was able to hide his face from the girl—from his guilt—so that his eyes could not betray him. Taking a long moment, he swallowed his emotions, as he had done many times before, and spoke again to Ayane without turning to face her.

"Is that all? If you work hard, that is well within your reach, Satetsu-chan. If you follow me, I can show you how to shape the world to your pleasing. All that I need from you is your trust and your loyalty." With his right hand, he grasped the door handle, though he paused before opening the door. "I suppose that it will be important to tell you that I see much of who I was at your age in you. A similar amount of who I am today as well. I expect you to not repeat that much, but I hope that it will help you understand why I do the things that I do around you from now on." He sighed, feeling the weight of how tired he was once more.

"I have gone to gather a number of shinobi. Eventually, they will be congregated in my offices. From among them, you will find your teammates. Come with me." With that, he opened the door and pressed through, if Ayane followed him, with Tazaemon falling in line beside them as Kyōsuke passed through the door and out from the building.

The Kazekage did nothing for a moment. Suddenly, he rose, and turned to face away from her. The young shinobi startetd at the abrupt movement, but quickly settled as he stood there, motionless. This meeting had been one surprise after another, it seemed. What’s he trying to hide? She wouldn’t press, though. He still made her uncomfortable. When he finally did speak, it was to inform her that she could very well achieve what she wanted. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. She would have accepted skepticism, or scorn, or even one of those acceptances people gave when they didn’t really believe what they were saying. When he said that he would show her - if she trusted him, and was loyal, she wasn’t sure how to feel.

On the one hand, why her? Why a genin, generally? Shingen was her age, if it was about youth; he was also vastly more skilled. She did not have time to think on it further - he did her the courtesy of answering her unasked question. He saw himself in Ayane, who he was and who he had been. She nodded when he told her to keep that silent. She got the feeling that this was a private man, and that she was being allowed in. The surest way to destroy that - and likely herself, by extension - was to betray the trust he asked for. ”O-of course.”

She got up as he said it was time to gather shinobi and distribute teams. It’s happening! Excitement at getting a team helped override the last vestiges of fear, for the moment. She grabbed her robe on the way out, gave it a quick pat to see if it had all her equipment, and fell into step beside the Kazekage.

It seemed the Kazekage was going elsewhere, a strange thing for the moment they had just shared. She bowed her head and made her way away, hoping to find something to do. There were several things she thought might be feasible. Now that the kunoichi was in town, there were missions to take, spars to fight. Skills to train, powers to unlock. She had only just begun to move sand around, and she knew she had plenty more training to do if she wanted to be the Kami that she so proclaimed.

Man, the Kazekage's author sure had been making a lot (or at least, relatively speaking) of fourth-wall-breaking posts recently. He had, in fact, rather avoided writing that sort of thing for a long while. In any case, he had done so once within the hour, and figured that he very well might end up doing so again within the day. Though he felt that it was possible that the habit would impinge upon the reputation of his style of writing, he had little choice when it came to filling the space between that which others had, in their minds, already abandoned. That, the author felt, he could understand.

The Kazekage, for his part, felt and knew none of this. What he knew is that, after some short conversation outside of Akina's home, Ayane parted ways with him, presumably to make for the sensei that he had assigned her (and perhaps even had given some rudimentary direction towards). The Kazekage's author was uncertain on this matter, as he found Ayane's author rather out-of-reach when he had been composing this post.

[Exit in the same manner as the exit here.]
