Thunderous booms echoed across the archipelago. The land was darkened by a thick field of stormy clouds overhead, blocking out the sun's rays entirely. Heavy rainfall came crashing down, accompanied by harsh gusts of wind. Through this mess of weather rode Taiyō and Tsuki. The newly-titled Chuunin rode in the back-seat atop a dog-like puppet. Although comfortably it could only seat one, Taiyō had managed to seat Tsuki in front of him by sitting up tightly behind her. From there, he had maintained a steady journey, holding her against the front of his body while his hands wrapped around her waist, flicking up and down at the wrists to command his puppet onward.

Now, the weather had grown far too volatile; Taiyō's judgement told him that it would be best to find shelter. Having just recently crossed a boat back onto the island that housed their village, it wasn't very far now. If conditions were clear in the next morning, the two Kirigakure shinobi could find themselves within the village before night fell upon them once more. Until then, Taiyō needed shelter to house them through the night. It took some searching, but eventually, the boy came across an area he remembered seeing before-- a small cave dug into the underside of a hill. Though it didn't go very far in, it would be enough to shield them from the frigid temperatures and pouring rain. Taiyō moved his puppet into the area and checked the inside for any signs of life to ensure that they weren't intruding on anything's home (specifically, making sure that there wasn't going to be a dangerous animal or anything if Taiyō left Tsuki alone for a short time).

Having found a place to spend the night, Taiyō needed to find some supplies. Fortunately, he had enough food stocked up within his backpack to get the both of them through the night. The big thing that the two would need was a source of warmth and a way to dry some of their clothes. For that, Taiyō went out into the small forest nearby, locating stumps, sticks, leaves, and anything else he could find that would assist in sparking a nice fire. Stacking the items into one of his puppets, the boy eventually turned back towards their camp. Along the way, he couldn't help but hope that Tsuki would wake up tonight. Drenched from the rain, the Hōzuki heir made his way back inside the cave.

When contemplating the nature of her long period of unconsciousness, Tsuki wouldn't exactly describe it as pleasant. She wouldn't particularly describe it as unpleasant, either. It just simply... was. The most similar feeling she could think of if she were trying to describe the experience would be being so tired that one just fell into an exhausted sleep the moment that they laid down. A kind of exhaustion that you could feel in your bones. The kind of sleep that was dreamless. It wasn't a warm, cozy sleep. It was a black, desperate sleep as the body yearned to recover. It wasn't painful or unpleasant, either. It simply... was.

Until, suddenly, it wasn't.

The young woman's eyes slowly creaked open. Her head throbbed slightly with pain, and she felt groggy. Blinking the sleep from her eyes, she slowly forced herself into a sitting position, her back feeling quite stiff. Glancing around, she wondered if her eyes were still closed before realizing that she was sitting in the darkness. She squinted, her heartbeat quickening as her eyesight adjusted to the dim lighting that spilled into the cave from outside. She had no idea where she was. It seemed like she was in a cave of some kind, but she had no idea how she had gotten here. What had happened?

The last thing she could remember was her fight at the Chuunin Exams, so how did she end up here? Assessing her situation a bit further, she took note of the horrible weather outside the cave. This gave her the feeling that she had been placed inside the cave by someone in order to keep her out of the rain. That means I'm not alone, she thought, wondering who exactly might have been moving her about. She wasn't bound in any way, so she doubted that it would be anyone particularly hostile. If she were lucky, it would be Shouko and Taiyou.

Slowly, Tsuki pushed her weary body behind a particularly large rock in the cave, hiding herself behind it. She wasn't sure who had brought her here, and in the event that it was someone hostile, she wanted to be ready to get the jump on them. So, crouching behind the rock, she waited. She waited until she heard footsteps entering the cave, her heart beating faster again as she slowly peered around from the edge of the rock to get a glimpse at who was returning to the cave. In the darkness, with only the dim light from outside the cave to aid her vision, she couldn't tell from a distance who the figure was, so she maintained her hidden position by the rock, her hands pressing themselves into a few quick handseals to prepare a technique in case it was needed.

The puppeteer and his two puppets moved deeper into the cave, and the boy's eyes adjusted steadily as he got deeper in. Looking to his left towards the walls, the absence of Tsuki's figure laying down came as a surprise. Wait, wasn't it here that I left her? That was Taiyō's first thought, so he calmly looked around the rest of his surroundings, recalling the landmarks he had taken note of when he initially set her down. There wasn't much to go off of beyond the rock arrangements, but he could have sworn this was the right spot. No, upon looking closely, he was sure that this was there he had left her. The Hōzuki's head turned faster now as he looked over his surroundings again. His heart beat faster as worry began to boil from within.

"Tsuuki? Hey, where are you?" He called out to her, instinctively dragging his bulky puppet Keimusho closer to his body. Chakra concentrated into the palm of Taiyō's right hand, manifesting into a small orb of light. Placing his palm out and upwards, it allowed for the light to give some illumination to his surroundings. It wasn't incredibly bright, still leaving the far-ends of the walls dim, but it was enough to see his own immediate area. To be honest, the situation left him feeling uncomfortable. "Hello? Is anyone there?" The boy wasn't sure what was more likely: Tsuki waking up and leaving the cave while he was out gathering supplies, or another passerby having the same idea as he did to take shelter from the thunderstorm. If that was the case, though, and Tsuki was suddenly not there ... Was there someone hostile here? Or, if she had left the cave while he was out, where could she have gone off too? The Chuunin slowly began to urge the puppet that he rode atop of forward to began checking around the rest of the space.

Hearing Taiyou's voice echo off of the walls of the cave, a wave of relief washed over the Kazahana heiress. Not just because it meant that she wasn't in harms way, but because it meant that Taiyou was also safe. And, if Taiyou was safe, that likely also meant that Shouko was safe, too. What a relief, she thought, exhaling a deep sigh as she leaped out from behind the large rock, running over to Taiyou and his puppet. He was seated atop it, but its saddle was large enough for two, as Tsuki deftly leaped atop the beast, embracing Taiyou in a tight hug. "I'm so glad you're safe," she said, not daring to let him go. She wasn't sure how long she was unconscious, how long it had been since she had seen his face or felt his touch, but she knew in her heart that it had been much too long.

She could barely see her betrothed's face in the dim light of the cave, made only somewhat brighter by light created by Taiyou himself, but she could hear the sound of his breathing, and she could feel him infront of her, and that was enough to quell her anxious heart. "Where are we?" She asked, her shinobi mind quick to switch to the situation at hand, despite the emotions that were welling up inside of her. "What happened? The last thing I remember, we were at the Chuunin Exams..." She explained, feeling a wave of frustration run through her. How could she have let something like this happen?

Without warning, a silhouette leaped out from behind one of the rocks just before Taiyō could begin his searching, heading straight for him. Shock beget a short yelp from the young Hōzuki. His hands moved to prepare himself, but before he could achieve any significant movement, the small amount of light that his jutsu afforded him cast light on the situation: it was Tsuki! Dropping his hands in relief, Taiyō let out a short laugh before he was bombarded by his betrothed's warm embrace. He tried to scoot his body back what little he could to make room for her, but space between them would be lacking no matter what he did. Pressed up against Tsuki, Taiyō's arms wrapped around the middle of her back. He squeezed tighter than normal, a sign of how overwhelmingly happy he was to see her awake once more.

"I ... I didn't know how long you were going to be out for. You had me so worried." Taiyō spoke softly, his mouth close to her ear as he brought her head in close to rest against his shoulder. It wasn't long afterward that Tsuki questioned what had happened and where it had led them to. "We're in a small cave just a couple hours out from Kirigakure. There's a thunderstorm outside, so I decided to take shelter here for the night." He started with answering that in order to alleviate some of her concerns. He knew that answering "what happened" was going to raise a lot more worries and concerns, so it was best to take care of what he could now. He paused for a moment, trying to figure out how to even begin. Really, so much had happened that it was hard to figure out what to mention and what to leave out.

"Our fight ended in a draw, I think right after you fell unconscious. The weather had gotten too bad to continue, so they decided to end it there. After that, I stayed by your side until Ryoka-sensei told us ..." Taiyō hesitated, not wanting to expose Tsuki to the horror and worry after just waking up. Yet, it was something she had to know about. "... About the war. Konohagakure and Sunagakure declared war on Kemurigakure, interrupting the rest of the exams to begin fighting. Ryoka-sensei told us that she intended to go to Kemurigakure's aid, not as the Mizukage, but as herself. She asked me to make sure that you got out of their safely. Returning you home is my first mission as ... A Chuunin." Saying that now still brought mixed feelings to the Hōzuki heir. His thoughts wandered back to the bravery of his fellow shinobi when they all signed on to enter the war-- to his own inability to voice that same heroism and righteousness. It still left Taiyō unsure why he was deemed fit to hold the title of Chuunin.

Hearing that they were close to home, Tsuki let out a deep sigh of relief. She had just been about to question where Shouko-chan and Ryoka-sensei were, but she suddenly fell silent as Taiyou continued his explanation of the world's events. A war? It came as an incredible surprise. The young girl hadn't thought that the world was in such a state of tension that it was about to erupt into a war. She knew about the simmering hostilities between Kemurigakure and Konohagakure, but that had somehow spilled over to include other villages, too? Just what was the scale of this war? The thoughts tugged at Tsuki's heartstrings, even through the comfort of Taiyou's embrace.

The feeling was temporarily abated when Taiyou told her of his promotion. That send a flurry of emotions running through her. She was, of course, so happy for and proud of Taiyou. She had nothing but the utmost faith in his abilities, but the way he mentioned his own rank left a somewhat sinking feeling in her gut. Had she not been made the same? Though her smile was nothing but earnest in her happiness for her beloved, she couldn't help the tears that were slowly beginning to build at the edges of her eyes, so she elected to hide her face against his chest. "I'm so happy, Taiyou-sama... Omedetou."

As she lingered in silence for a moment, a feeling of worry still festered inside of her, as she glanced from side to side, as if something was missing. The girl's brow furrowed in dismay, as she turned her gaze back towards Taiyou. "Taiyou-sama, where are Ryoka-sensei and Shouko-chan?"

"Thank you." Was all that Taiyō responded with to his idol's congratulations. At another time, or maybe in different circumstances, he would have replied with much more. In that alternate situation, he was sure that he would have thanked her for all that she had done to spur him on, for all the times she had protected him, and he would have vowed again to live up to his achievement in order to make her proud. However, in the moment, he could find no more words worth saying. The combination of his own uncertainty in his promotion and the higher importance of the war silenced those other ideas. Those were words for another day.

"They're, uhh, well ... The last time I saw them was on the way out of the Land of Iron. Actually, we only met with Ryoka-sensei's clone, who told us she was already engaging in battle. Against who, I don't know ... But she had already made her choice to help stand up against the war. Shouko-chan was ordered to deliver a message to Kumogakure, but she said that she would be heading to Kemurigakure as soon as she could, so ... She's probably going to get caught up in the war too." Taiyō explained, unable to hide the worry from his voice. Ever since they had parted ways, he couldn't shake the concern from his mind. The Hōzuki's eyes drifted away from Tsuki's losing focus as he stared off into a nondescript spot on the ground. His thoughts fell back on the feeling that he should be there with them, backing them up through this troubled time. Even if Ryoka and Shouko hadn't explicitly asked him to come, wasn't it his duty as their friend to be there?

What would Tsuki think of it all? Taiyō waited anxiously to hear from her. She was always a strong voice of reason that helped clear his head in stressful moments. There was so much to consider about their situation and what they were doing; he couldn't deny that help sifting through it would help tremendously.

"In battle already?!" Tsuki echoed, her voice slightly raised in concern as Taiyou explained that their teacher had already been engaged in battle by the time that the two of them had left the Land of Iron. A sense of worry filled Tsuki, and while she was confident in her teacher's abilities, she was sure that someone wasn't likely to fight her if they weren't confident of victory, themselves. Still, she pushed her fears to the back of her mind. There were more pressing issues to focus on for the immediate future. Even if Tsuki wanted to help her teacher, it would be impossible. It had been several days since then, and her teacher's battle would be long over by now. The girl could only hope for Ryoka's success.

Of more immediate concern to the teenage girl was the fate of her and Taiyou's teammate, Shouko. She, too, seemed to be heading off into battle, but who knew when she would actually become a part of one? A flurry of questions was building inside of the Kazahana's mind, and she hardly knew where she should begin with them. For a moment she was silent, as she worked to organize her thoughts into a cohesive manner. She didn't want to worry Taiyou, after all. She needed to be strong, for his sake.

Looking back up at Taiyou, meeting his eyes with her own, she spoke again. "If Shouko-chan is heading off to battle, why are we heading back to the village? Did something happen there? What are our orders?"

It was just like her to so quickly turn her attention towards others. Only moments ago, Tsuki had been unconscious. That didn't stop her from caring. She was already turning her focus towards Shouko, questioning why the two of them were heading back while their teammate was heading into battle. That was something Taiyō knew the answer to, and yet, it was an answer that the Hōzuki didn't want to voice. He kept his gaze on her, loosening his grip around her slightly in order to give him space to lean back, making it easier to look into her beautiful eyes.

"No, no, nothing happened in the village ... We're heading back because that's what Ryoka-sensei asked us to do. She gave us our missions urgently, and we didn't have much time to question what was going on. My guess is that she knew that the arena had become a danger zone, and seeing as you were unconscious, wanted me to get you far from danger. She probably asked me to return with you here rather than Kemurigakure because she didn't want to order anyone into this war with her." Taiyō could tell that his answer was likely lackluster. For such an important decision, it didn't really have much more to it other than, "we were told to do this." "I realized that Shouko-chan really cares for Ryoka-sensei. That's why she went; she would do anything to keep Ryoka-sensei out of danger, even if that meant running into a war by her side." Taiyō's eyes fell away from his betrothed's, dropping to the ground as he exhaled a heavy breath of air.

"That's why we're here too, you know. I'm sorry, I ... I couldn't risk it. I couldn't risk you." Taiyō's voice grew less confident by the end of his sentence, unsure what Tsuki would think of his decision. It was one born of his love for her, that much he knew, but ... It was also a cowardly decision; rather than trust in himself and in her so that they could go help their teammate, Taiyō opted to bring Tsuki home because he couldn't find the confidence to do that.

"Heading back..." The kunoichi whispered, the words tasting foul on her lips. She abhorred the thought of returning to the village now, knowing that her friend and her teacher were on the front lines. Why should she return and hide, knowing that others were off, fighting battles on her behalf? It felt like it was the chuunin exams all over again, with Tsuki trapped in her winter globe while Shouko did all of the hard work. It was a feeling that Tsuki absolutely despised. She didn't hate Shouko for what she did, Tsuki only hated the fact that she was unable to do it herself. She let her gaze wander over the soft features of her beloved's face, raising up one of her hands to gently stroke the side of his face, feeling the soft touch of his skin on hers, which helped to calm her rapidly beating heart.

"Thank you for wanting to protect me, Taiyou-sama," she whispered sweetly, meaning every single word. It meant the world to her that he was willing to care for her and her safety. However, as shinobi, she knew that her safety was never a given, and she didn't want to sit back and do nothing while the lives of her loved ones were being risked. She took her hands and gently enclosed them around Taiyou's own, squeezing the boy's hands softly, and offered him a beautiful smile through the thin trail of tears that ran down her face. "That means more to me than you could ever know," she admitted softly.

"But I refuse to sit on the sidelines while my friends are off fighting. I'm a kunoichi, not a princess, and that means that I'm willing to fight for what I care for, and that means Shouko-chan and Ryoka-sensei, and everyone in the village." Her gaze was no longer soft, instead it was hard and filled with determination. "I want to go to the front lines, Taiyou-sama," she stated plainly. "Will you come with me?"

It had been so long since he had felt the soft, delicate touch of Tsuki's hand upon his skin. When he felt it gently caress his cheek, Taiyō closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. His hand came up slowly to rest upon hers, feeling the back of her warm hand in his own. The Hōzuki basked in the moment, in their eye of the storm-- he heard the discontent in her voice when he told her of their plan. He feared for the words that would come to follow, soaking in the happiness that he could gather beforehand. His hands dropped to his lap as he opened his eyes again and turned to the girl that had earned his heart. Even in the darkness, her teeth glistened. Even with the tears, her cheeks still looked perfect.

Tsuki shared her feelings, declaring her intentions to battle alongside everyone else from Kirigakure. Taiyō's heart beat faster and faster as a subtle tremble shot through his body. Her decision was exactly what he feared, more than anything. "Ts-Tsuki, I ..." He stammered, a quirk that he had been doing well to conquer in the recent days. That it had come back showed how flustered he was now. "This is a war, not another Chuunin Exam fight. We struggled against a couple of Genin! What do you think we could possibly do against anyone stronger?" His voice went up in volume as his words flowed faster than he usually spoke. His gaze fell downward onto Tsuki's hands, still wrapped around his own. "Remember that huge explosion that destroyed the Mizukage's Office a couple of weeks ago? The attack from the Darkeater?" He paused for a moment, though he knew that she wouldn't have forgotten that tragedy. "Shouko-chan and I investigated it, you know ... Capable of explosions like that, moved faster than anyone could see, strong enough to smash through our gates without a second thought ... Those are the sort of people that might be in that war."

Meeting someone like that on the battlefield was a terrifying thought. Against someone like that, Taiyō knew that he would be able to do nothing. To know that if something like that targeted Tsuki he would be powerless to save her terrified him. In that heated moment, it didn't occur to him that mentioning the dangers could potentially give his betrothed even more cause to go and assist their friends. "And, and I ... I want to marry you, Tsuki." Taiyō blurted out without thought. As soon as his mind caught up with his mouth, he pulled his head back slightly as a heavy blush fell onto his face. It was a wild jump in topic, there was no doubt about that. He knew it might sound silly, considering they were already betrothed, but ... The decision for Taiyō and Tsuki to be married was one born by their parents, not them. The Hōzuki heir had always acknowledged it factually, as something that was going to happen as a result of their positions as heirs of powerful clans. This time, however, was different. Taiyō didn't speak from the perspective of what his family wanted.

This time, it was what Taiyō wanted. Between the two of them, expressing these sorts of things had always been much harder for him. The last time he had gotten close to expressing it was that night that the Mizukage's Office had been attacked. Back then, all he could muster was that kiss on her forehead. "I want to see your smiling face again and again, everyday, but ... I can't do that if either of us die." Taiyō leaned into her, resting his chin over her shoulder. Now, she wasn't the only one with tears cascading down her cheeks.

Hearing Taiyou's words, Tsuki's mind went blank for a second. That blatant confession of his feelings, those words that she had always longed to hear, but that had eluded her for so long. It made a wave of emotions well up inside her, and she couldn't hold back the tears that came pouring down her face. She had always wanted to hear those words, always wanted to hear him say that he wanted to marry her, just like she wanted to marry him, but she never imagined they would be used almost like a weapon, as a reason to keep her from doing something that she considered to be her duty. As happy as hearing those words made her, it also tore at her heart to know the context in which they were said. She was the saddest happiest girl in the world, a bittersweet mixture of feelings that left her unsure whether she wanted to kiss the boy across from her or punch him.

"Taiyou-sama," she began, her voice a mess as she choked back her sobs. "I love you so much, more than I think you know. I really hope you realize how much I love you some day. It makes me so happy to hear you say those words, you have no idea. But... I can't let you use them as a reason to hold me back. I want to marry you, Taiyou-sama, I want it more than anything else in the world, but I can't let that dream hold back my other dreams. I want to be your wife, but I also want to be a proud shinobi of the Hidden Mist. I'm so scared of what might happen to you every time you go on a mission, I'm so scared that you'll die because you chose to be a ninja, but I have faith in you that you'll grow stronger. I would never dream of holding you back from your duty. So, even though the thought hurts, even though I'm beside myself with fear, I would never dream of telling you not to go and do your duty. I can't just sit by while you tell me not to do mine," the girl paused here, raising a hand up to her face to wipe away all of the tears that had spilled, her voice taking on a new, steely resolve.

"I'm going to go."

The moment she pointed it out, guilt struck Taiyō harder than it ever had before. For a few moments, the boy was immobilized with shock-- not at the words that came from the woman of his dreams, but at himself. How could he say something so stupid?! The words he said hadn't come from any conscious decision on his part, but they were his words all the same. When Tsuki explained what it was that she gathered from his message, it left him ashamed of himself. "T-Tsuki, I ..." He stuttered after hearing his fiance state with determination that she wouldn't shirk her duty. What was he supposed to say? He kept Tsuki pulled in close to him, not daring to lift his head away from her shoulder now. To do that meant to risk looking her in the eyes, and that wasn't something he could do now. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry ..!" More tears broke out from behind his eyes, streaming down onto Tsuki's clothing. The boy sniffled as he tried to sort the words that cluttered his thoughts.

"I just ... I don't know how you can do it. How you can be this strong." His voice began to steady itself, growing quiet as the Hōzuki heir's thoughts reflected inward. She's scared too? Then, every time I go out ... "How do you handle the fear of losing the person you care about more than anything?" Of course, he shouldn't have been surprised; Tsuki had always seemed like an unmovable pillar of strength to him. "I would never mean to hold you back. I'm sorry." He repeated, hoping that she wouldn't hold it against him. "It's just ... This is bigger than anything we've ever had to deal with, and that scares me. If anything were to happen to you, I don't know what I'd do." Even now, he didn't want Tsuki to go. This wasn't a war that Kirigakure necessarily needed to be in-- their only connection to it was that the rest of their team had gone to battle for another village's well-being. Yet, he couldn't stop her from chasing after her dreams. He steeled himself, knowing what that meant for him. For her, it was time for Taiyō to grow up.

"... Promise me two things, please, Tsuki?" Taiyō finally pulled himself away from her, backing his head away until he could see her face once again, several inches in front of his own. "First, promise me that you won't get in over your head and do something reckless." His voice turned firmer. Letting his betrothed go off to war was almost impossibly challenging to begin with-- hearing these things would do a lot to help him settle for what was to come. "Second, promise me that you won't leave my side. And then, here's my promise to you. I'll do everything I can to protect you."

What had began as a forlorn night in a dark cave, only barely protected from the howling wind and the stinging rain outside had turned into one of the brightest moments of Tsuki's life, listening to Taiyou's words. Her words have given him something - no, perhaps it was that her words stoked something that was always there - a resolve that she hadn't seen before in her betrothed. It was an awe inspiring thing to see, and for a moment she wondered if, just perhaps, she brought out the best in Taiyou. Would he be confessing these feelings to someone else, if it were not her before him? She wasn't sure for certain, but either way it made her feel special that she could help him grow as a person, and she felt honored to be able to watch him grow. She gently ran her hand down his cheek, and when his face lifted from her shoulder, that same gentle touch was there to help wipe away his tears. Each one was so pure, something that could only belong to someone like Taiyou-sama; the Kazahana heiress had seen many crocodile tears during her life, but these, she knew, were not that.

"I can't get into any trouble with you by my side, Taiyou-sama," she softly teased, affection welling up in her voice as she placed a gentle kiss on the youth's cheek. "After-all, you're such a stickler for the rules. I know nothing will happen to me with you there."

The young man sniffled a few times, trying to will away the stuffiness in his nose. The back of his hand wiped across his eyes to rid himself of the leftover water. A soft, short laugh escaped his lips when his betrothed commented on how much of a stickler for the rules he was. At first, he didn't say anything back-- his mind and body had focused on the perfect, warming feeling the enveloped him when he felt Tsuki's lips press against his cheek. His face reddened steadily while his gaze remained still on the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. "Y-Yeah, that's right ..." Taiyō replied, but his words came absent-mindedly. The Hōzuki heir's thoughts remained elsewhere.

When he looked at Tsuki in this moment, it made him think about how much he wanted to mature for her sake. As much as he tried to run from his problems and concerns, he had to admit ... They weren't children anymore. He was seventeen. No, from this point on, Taiyō couldn't ease up on his goals. Tsuki could only move forward so slowly: he wouldn't allow himself to fall behind. He found himself lost staring into those breathtaking, reddish-brown eyes that looked back at him with such admiration and affection. He couldn't stop the heat from flushing into his face, his nerves going haywire. This was the part where he normally looked away sheepishly.

He needed to jump. Taiyō's eyes closed while his head leaned in. As he leveled himself with Tsuki and moved closer, he could feel his heart thudding louder and louder. In one sudden act of newfound courage, Taiyō's lips moved towards Tsuki's. This time, he didn't shy away. No, that wasn't the perfect feeling. Taiyō thought to himself. This is it.
