Name of Contract:
百鬼夜行 | Hyakki Yagyō | The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons

Signed by:
Kyōsuke Chikamatsu

Contract Type:
Spirit, Blood

Species:
Kitsune

Contract Abilities:
Genjutsu, Katon, Flight

Contract Description:

Among the eldest of the spirits that reside in the home of the kitsune, Kakuriyo (隠り世, lit. Hidden World), the great scroll that binds the realms of the living with their own is kept secret and safe. Only a few shinobi over several centuries have ever laid eye or hand upon it, but the first from among these gave the scroll its name, Hyakki Yagyō, for having bonded him to the souls of countless spirits, whose power seemed to him to be a strange, almost demonic force. In Kakuriyo, corporeal forms are foregone for the liberating forms of the raw soul, leaving many weaker spirits insubstantial and invisible. The strongest of Kakuriyo's inhabitants are also its oldest: a council of great spirits whose forms vary from those of kitsune to things hardly describable.

The kitsune, spirits that are native to Kakuriyo, manifest in forms most similar to the foxes of the world that the spirits have termed Utsushiyo (現世, lit. Actual World). Each kitsune is born when the soul of a person who, in passing through purgatory on their path to Jōdo, manages to leave behind them enough of their physical and spiritual energy. Those who naturally posses such incredible physical and spiritual energy attract the natural energy of Utsushiyo into purgatory as they die, leaving the energy in an environment completely alien to it. In the cold and foreign world between life and death, the fragmentary energies of the deceased and the world of the living coalesce into what is initially a formless mixture in the shape of the imprint left by the person's death.

Into Kakuriyo, a world that vaguely mimics Utsushiyo, these imprints eventually wander by means unknown. Once there, they properly take shape. The imprints that take form as kitsune are those left behind almost exclusively by the souls of those who, in life, possessed great affinity for Katon and genjutsu, and whose energies bonded to the natural energy of stars. Four kitsune, through both the accumulation of power and energy over the course of their incredibly long lives (whose end can really only occur if slain in battle), as well as by the circumstances of their creation upon the deaths of individuals whose skill in life often remained unparalleled, maintain themselves as the heads of their domains.

A culture among the kitsune, somewhat similar to that of shinobi, has developed over millennia; tribalist in nature, the kitsune have gathered into three groups that are similarly-skilled, and whose appearances vary within only a small range. Each group, referred to between the spirits as a "family", maintains as much as it can within the confines of a village of sorts (though the borders between each are indistinct and unrestricted). Within each domain sits a castle, whose name corresponds with the time of day at which the sky in each remains permanently at rest: daytime, evening, and night. Three of the four most powerful kitsune preside over their families from the castle that they have made their seat, but the fourth takes no one place as a permanent location of residence.

The fourth and utmost of the four most powerful kitsune, Oinari (御稲荷, lit. Honourable Rice-Bearer), is considered elusive even among the kitsune, rarely showing her face to even her own kind. Though each family would like nothing more to claim her as one of their own, she makes of herself no leader to her kind. Rather, her name is synonymous with the connection that the kitsune maintain with Utsushiyo and those whose blood marks Hyakki Yagyō. With her, the scroll that allows shinobi to summon the spirits forth from the realm of the immaterial is kept eternally hidden and safe. It is from her that all knowledge of the secrets safeguarded by the kitsune is passed by signatory to signatory.

Image

The kitsune, being spirits of a realm that is no more than a realm in mirror of the physical world, take strange forms when summoned. Though a smokescreen can be used to obscure their arrival, they do not change locations in the sense of most summoning. Rather, they manifest into the physical world as their essences are pulled from Kakuriyo, appearing to melt into being out of thin air, like some form of liquid shadow. This process, while incredibly strange to look upon, is relatively easily understood by those shinobi who take careful observation of the manifestation of the kitsune as they are summoned (especially if the onlooking shinobi have sensory capabilities, as being able to visualise the chakra of the user of the summoning technique and the kitsune as they are summoned clarifies almost any question the onlooker could have); the user of the technique that summons a kitsune calls upon their spirit in Kakuriyo channels that spirit's essence through themselves, coaxing the spirit to take physical form by letting the chakra of the summoned spirit flow through them.

Their forms in Utsushiyo are similar to those they possess in their home environment, though with some notable differences: unlike in Kakuriyo, which is an environment that itself is made of chakra and its component energies, their bodies possess acute edges and textures like those of other physical bodies. Though their most direct analogue is that of bijū, they are yet dissimilar to even them, as their physical and spiritual energies are muted by the process of being transferred from one world into another, where bijū are both composed of physical and spiritual energies on top of exhibiting that power in excess. On top of that, kitsune, unlike bijū, do not reform when they are dispersed, as their presences in Utsushiyo are neither strong enough to reform without the aid of healing, nor do they pass on to Jōdo when they die.

Name of Summon: 善狐 | Zenko

Rank of Summon: B

Contract Abilities: Flight, Katon, Genjutsu

Summon Description: The Zenko (lit. Good Foxes) are a group of four kitsune, bound as brothers with an oath: to defend and serve the human soul to which they have been bound since birth. Their names are Shakushōsen (赤松戦士, lit. Red Pine Soldier), Byakushōsen (白松戦士, lit. White Pine Soldier), Kokushōsen (黒松戦士, lit. Black Pine Soldier), and Seishōsen (青松戦士, lit. Green Pine Soldier). As prophecy, issued to the four kitsune in their youth by Shinjunomimi, the head of the Hiru family, the four had searched for a decade for Kyōsuke Chikamatsu, despite not knowing it was him for whom they searched. The four scoured the domains of the kitsune for any who knew of means by which to interact with or to contact those native to Utsushiyo, eventually learning from Myōnichi, a kitsune of prominence within the Yoru family, of a shinobi who had the predilection for the skills that Oinari sought out in those whom she was willing to allow to sign their names onto Hyakki Yagyō. This shinobi, a young Kyōsuke, was at the time but a jōnin, and had not long been afield in Kaminari no Kuni.

Not long after the four learned of this shinobi did Oinari bring the young man to Kakuriyo to learn of the kitsune. During his first night among the spirits, the Zenko presented themselves to him, knowing him to be the soul to which they were bound. There, among the trees of the peach orchard in which they met him, the four forever marked their blood with his, forevermore binding themselves to his service, for soever as long as he asked of them.

The Zenko possess many abilities:
  • Shin no Henge (真の変化, lit. True Transformation), an ability possessed by many kitsune, allows each spirit to assume multiple forms. These forms, unlike those created with Henge no Jutsu are true forms that do not need thought or control of chakra to maintain, though they do not possess the same versatility as Henge no Jutsu's transformations. Instead, Shin no Henge allows each kitsune to change their form into one of a set of other specific forms, unique to that kitsune (as if they each had multiple faces, though with each face belonging to them). The forms that the Zenko can assume are similar to the first image above (which is the appearance they manifest when they are first summoned, unless mentioned otherwise), though with fur and armour to match the colour in their name, that of a fox with an appearance like that of the second image above, though with fur to match the colour in their name, and that of a man (each with a generally similar face and build, though each distinguishable from one another, similar to the last image above, though with clothes that match the colour in their name. Those with sensory capabilities can identify that the kitsune in the form of a human are not, in fact, human, and can identify each individual kitsune regardless of their form (as their chakra signatures remain the same).
  • O no Shibari (尾の縛り, lit. Tails' Binding), another ability possessed by many kitsune, describes the amount of control that kitsune are able to maintain over their forms as they manifest in the physical world. Only usable while in the fully vulpine or half-vulpine forms, O no Shibari allows the kitsune who possess it to extend the length and width of their tails up to twenty metres and five metres respectively, and for them to manipulate their tails with the Strength and Dexterity that they could otherwise manipulate their limbs with. Note that, unlike Hari Jizō, this does not give the kitsune's hair the properties of steel (they have the Constitution of the kitsune).
  • The Zenko, as they are bound by an oath affirmed by a seal applied to their very essences, possess a shared presence in the physical world. As such, they cannot be summoned individually, and (when in the physical world) possess the same Attributes. Additionally, their pool of Stamina is shared (and as such, a jutsu used by one is effectively a jutsu used by all four). Lastly, if one of the four is harmed sufficiently (or killed), the remainder of the group is dispelled as if the technique used to summon them had worn off.
  • The Zenko each possess a sword and a set of armour. While the armour only manifests while they are in the form of a humanoid fox, the sword manifests both in the human and humanoid fox forms.
  • The cost of summoning the Zenko the is unusual as well; where other B-Rank summons would cost a B-Rank amount of chakra to summon, the Zenko cost four (if something would reduce the cost of their summoning by a rank, it would be reduced to the cost of four C-Ranks).

Name of Summon: 明日 | Myōnichi

Rank of Summon: A

Contract Abilities: Flight, Katon, Genjutsu

Summon Description: Though a member of the Yoru family, Myōnichi is a kitsune in service to Oinari. Her role, as she sees it, is to serve as a bridge between Oinari, the signatories of the Hyakki Yagyō, and the three families. As a student of Oinari and a Shokuzaidōka, she has acted as a teacher to many of the shinobi that have made their way to Kakuriyo in both technique and philosophy. Profoundly fatalist, as many kitsune sworn to the Yoru family are, her outlooks on combat and lifestyle bleed together in a strange way; fighting severely and without fear, and believing that strength, like wisdom, an simultaneously and inherent and determinant factor in one's role in the world, Myōnichi could easily appear harsh and uncaring.

The reality of her personality is worth considering though, as even the person to whom she might seem least caring should, with the context of the nature of kitsune, be able to understand her deterministic perspective. Where the life of a shinobi might very well be a short, brutish one, in which they may meet a painful end, the life of a kitsune is only ever made short by a death that is final unlike that of the shinobi, as kitsune do not pass on to Jōdo. In this light, which Myōnichi is usually self-aware enough to explain, her attitude could very well appear an inevitability. All the same, she instructs those she teaches without any attempt to alter or soften her martial nature.
Image
Myōnichi possesses several abilities:
  • Shin no Henge (真の変化, lit. True Transformation), an ability possessed by many kitsune, allows each spirit to assume multiple forms. These forms, unlike those created with Henge no Jutsu are true forms that do not need thought or control of chakra to maintain, though they do not possess the same versatility as Henge no Jutsu's transformations. Instead, Shin no Henge allows each kitsune to change their form into one of a set of other specific forms, unique to that kitsune (as if they each had multiple faces, though with each face belonging to them). The forms that Myōnichi can assume are that of one similar to the image above (something that appears as a dragon in the eastern style with many vulpine features; with fur, an upturned snout, a flattened skull, a tail that grows bushier near the end, legs typical of a digitigrade animal with a dewclaw, and the dentition of a canid) often called koryū (狐龍, lit. fox-dragon), that of a fox with six tails and white fur tinged blue, and that of a woman with ice-blue eyes, silk-like black hair, and of pale complexion in a long blue jūnihitoe. Those with sensory capabilities can identify that the kitsune in the form of a human are not, in fact, human, and can identify each individual kitsune regardless of their form (as their chakra signatures remain the same). Myōnichi assumed to form of a koryū when summoned, unless otherwise specified.
  • Ame no Ukihashi (天の浮き橋, lit. the Floating Bridge of Heaven) is the name given to the ability possessed by only a few kitsune, mostly of the Yoru family, who can assume the form of a koryū. In this form alone, kitsune can fly. The manner of this flight appears strange, as the kitsune appear to dance across the sky, stepping lightly on invisible stairs, creating small sparks with each cadent footfall. The form of a koryū is roughly equivalent in size to the dragon created by Chōjū Giga (that is to say, large enough to swallow a person whole but not quite the size of bijū or the larger summons from the Snake or Toad contracts).
  • Reimu (霊夢, lit. Revelatory Dream) is an ability apparently unique to Myōnichi (as no other kitsune has yet to manifest it), honed at the behest of Oinari, that allows her a limited form of contact with Utsushiyo unlike that accomplished by Kohō: Kokei in two major ways. Should she choose, Myōnichi can manifest herself in the dreams of any mortal (willing or unwilling, so long as the player behind the character in question is willing to engage in the thread), taking whatsoever form she desires. This, unlike Kohō: Kokei, allows her alone to enter the dreams of a reluctant participant. While apparent in the dreams of others, both Myōnichi and the dreamer have the capacity to accomplish whatever suits their minds' desires, though any attempt to kill Myōnichi within the dream will result in her connection with the person faltering, and the person in question waking from their sleep. Should the person accept an invitation to Kakuriyo from Myōnichi within the dream, they are able to enter it as if they had used Kohō: Kokei. They can leave Kakuriyo either in the same manner as is required to leave it when using Kohō: Kokei, or by being dismissed by Myōnichi. In order to use this ability, Myōnichi must meditate in a manner similar to that required to use Kohō: Kokei.
  • Jisha (寺社, lit. Temple-Shrine) is an ability possessed by kitsune directly in service to Oinari. In addition to being her students, those kitsune in service to Oinari act as her tutelary spirits, observing all those around her and protecting her when necessary. This ability, granted to those who know it by Oinari, allows those who possess it to know the true name of all who are present in Kakuriyo, as well as the true location of Oinari so long as she as within Kakuriyo.

Name of Summon: 勝頼 | Katsuyori

Rank of Summon: A

Contract Abilities: Flight, Katon, Genjutsu

Summon Description: The Higure family's counterpart to Myōnichi, Katsuyori is a kitsune in service to Oinari. Rather than having come to Oinari of his own accord, he was sent to study under her by [name of head of Higure family].

He does the things that he's asked to, usually without question. Pretty quiet dude.

[rest of personality and background description here, probably later]

Katsuyori possesses several abilities:
  • Shin no Henge (真の変化, lit. True Transformation), an ability possessed by many kitsune, allows each spirit to assume multiple forms. These forms, unlike those created with Henge no Jutsu are true forms that do not need thought or control of chakra to maintain, though they do not possess the same versatility as Henge no Jutsu's transformations. Instead, Shin no Henge allows each kitsune to change their form into one of a set of other specific forms, unique to that kitsune (as if they each had multiple faces, though with each face belonging to them). The forms that Katsuyori can assume are that of ones similar to the images above; that of a man and a woman, generally similar though with a few notable differences. Both have expressionless, faded brown eyes, braided black hair with streaks of silver-grey, and are relatively pale. The most notable difference, beyond the apparent sex, is the style of dress that each maintains, followed closely in notability by the placement of tattoos (the most prominent of which is in the shape of a koryū). Additionally, Katsuyori can take the shape of a fox the size of a large dog, with white-grey fur streaked with dull blue tones. Those with sensory capabilities can identify that the kitsune in the form of a human are not, in fact, human, and can identify each individual kitsune regardless of their form (as their chakra signatures remain the same). Katuyori should be assumed to take the form of a man when summoned, unless otherwise specified.
  • While in the form of a man, Katsuyori wields an ōdachi roughly 92 centimetres in length. While in the form of a woman, Katsuyori wields a somewhat-straightened wakizashi roughly 62 centimetres in length.
  • En'enra (煙々羅, lit. lightweight-fabric smoke) is an ability apparently unique to Katsuyori. As more and more of his Stamina is expended in Utsushiyo, his physical form becomes less and less distinct. This process manifests visually as the edges of whatever form he takes appearing to be shrouded into a lingering, drifting smoke that can appear to act both as a heavy gas or an oil-like liquid. While in combat, this effect can be establishing to engaging opponents. For every 30% of Stamina that Katsuyori has expended, opponents engaged with him receive a penalty of a minor advantage to their tracking and precognition for the purposes of engaging with him (i.e. this debuff does not apply when engaging with the summoner). This also only counts the total Stamina of Katsuyori (i.e. not his Stamina as divided by shadow clones).
