Akimichi Chojiro
A simple action, a glance and a small smile, but it was enough to completely freeze the Akimichi. In that moment, in that small exchange, he could see a glimpse of the Shikaji he knew before the attack on the Intelligence Office. He even mentioned Inoe. A small grin of his own grew and grew until it was threatening to replace the rest of the man's face. He began to laugh. It was a chuckle at first but soon became outright boisterous in nature. "So you are in there after all, ay Shikaji? I thought I had lost you there! Yeah, we should get going, Inoe's probably gotten pretty lonely since we've been gone for so long." His eyes turned to Junko and softened considerably as the laughter died down leaving him with that tingling feeling you get in your cheeks when an especially good joke is told. "You would've loved her, Junko. You two would've probably been pretty close, but that's just how Inoe was. She treated everyone like they were her childhood friends."

He was silent for a moment - lost to memories of a time he could never return to - and then lumbered back into the present. He turned to face the road ahead of them; the one that would take them home for the first time in over half a year. So many things had changed both immediate and lands away. While it was their mission now to find Rei Uchiha, the Fox, would it be after they were back in the village? The war had begun and times were surely going to grow hard for everyone soon. He took the first step of many that would be needed to see all the faces he hadn't seen in so long. There was Seto, the old man, the one that was captured. He wanted to know about how his students had done. The Aburame girl he had spoke of was the only one he had heard stories of from the war but what of the others that he spoke of that night in the cemetery? Then there was his precious kouhai, Inahara. Had she met up with her team again? Was she left behind them because of her choice to remain in the village? There were so may questions that could only be answered by going home but the biggest one was right there with him. A nagging question that ate him alive.

"So, you just weren't going to tell me you could open the Gates huh?"

Sensing that it was a sensitive subject, and feeling a bit like she was intruding on a memory simply by virtue of having never known of such a person, Junko simply nodded to the comment that she might have been good friends with Inoe. It wasn't something she could understand or empathize with, she realized, even though she felt a bit of a hollow spot inside her. Had she ever lost anyone, to speak of them in past tense so? To tell people how they would have acted, how they would enjoy one another's company, or not? Was she now filling a hollow spot like that for Shikaji? His dialogue suggested otherwise, but would she ever truly know? The thoughts, combined with the sudden appearance and disappearance of her psychological trauma, worried her. Who was she? Such thoughts she thought had been abandoned, but now, with her strange feelings, she could feel herself wondering again. Why did she react so negatively? Had the Fox done something to her? Done this to her?

Shoulders drew up, then dropped in a sigh. She couldn't find the answers to these questions now. Her senpai had just posed a question to Shikaji, so she simply remained quiet, having nothing worth asserting.

Nara Shikaji
Though Chojiro was happy to talk about Inoe, and how Junko would have loved her, Junko seemed at a loss for words. It made sense; hearing about someone that was close to the people you were close to, but who knew them before you did. Shikaji didn't know if it made Junko feel jealous, or simply awkward, but either way, she seemed to want to avoid answering, and that spoke for itself, so Shikaji didn't press her for her thoughts in the matter. Chojiro filled the gap in the conversation almost instantly, anyway, asking him about his use of the Gates. The thought gave the Nara pause for a moment. Had he actually used them? He reflected for a moment on the past events and fights he had experienced ever since leaving. The Eight Gates were a series of techniques that their sensei had used, so it was something that the two men were familiar with, but Shikaji had never thought that he had actually used it himself. However, in that moment, reflecting upon the situation a bit further, Shikaji wondered if, perhaps the states that he had entered against the bandits, and against the samurai from the Land of Lightning as well, were perhaps some stage of the Gates.

"I hadn't really thought I had," he spoke honestly, raising a hand up to scratch at the side of his head as they walked. "I guess I might have, a few times lately in combat. I just kind of... let go. Everything seemed to click, to flow a bit slower, everything a bit clearer. Like a kind of battle-trance. That might just be what the Gate of Opening is," the tokubetsu jounin pondered. "Things have been strange, ever since my rinnegan appeared," he admitted. "I feel like I've been more in-tune with my taijutsu, and even my bukijutsu, lately. Meanwhile, genjutsu has felt like more and more of a struggle."

Akimichi Chojiro
Seeing his friend open the Gates wasn't something that concerned Chojiro, more it simply reminded him of their old Sarutobi sensei. The man had been very adept at using those things and the Akimichi had always wanted to learn from him. It was never the right time, that was what he was always told. That's why seeing his friend, who until recently, had never really used Taijutsu struck him harder than it should have.

"You? Let go? Who are you again?" He said, walking a circle around his friend as he talked. The Shikaji he knew couldn't let go of a hot potato that was burning his hand, let alone his emotions. This entire journey was a nod to the fact that he was the great king of grudges.

There was one thing that the man couldn't disagree with. Things had most certainly changed since Shikaji's eyes went all wonky. A strong pat on his shoulder was the first reply the Nara got when explaining the change in his way of fighting, followed by a boisterous and knowing laugh. "Just like me! I knew you looked up to your senpai but to take after me now? I'm flattered, Shikaji!" He removed his hand and took a step closer, cupping his mouth as if telling a secret. "Maybe not right now, but you gotta teach me the Gates. Sarutobi sensei was always such a hoarder."

The Gate of Opening...? Junko thought to herself as the two spoke, choosing to fold her hands behind her back. It sounded familiar, especially in the context of battle states. Had she overheard someone talking about it at the Cliffhanger? Paranoia about her lost identity had her firmly letting go of the train of thought, letting it end there. She must have. Teeth chewed on the inside of her cheek as she brushed more road dirt from her outfit, hands smoothing cloth and dusting debris in small clouds that created small, grey shadows before being blown away by the light breeze. She still felt uneasy, but it was a manageable unease, one she could hide behind a soft smile. Was her amnesia catching? Shikaji did seem different, and it seemed like forgetting lessons or abilities could be a dangerous thing. Was that why she was left? No one at the Cliffhanger seemed all that affected, but then again, she was much closer to him than she had been with any of her colleagues.

Nara Shikaji
"Sure, though I'm not sure how I would teach it," Shikaji replied, pondering for a moment how he might be able to make Chojiro let go, as, despite all of his love for his friend, Shikaji didn't find Chojiro to be the most adept when it came to inward reflection. Still, the Nara felt like it was something that he definitely could teach; Chojiro was certainly the kind of person that could do anything if he put his mind to it, it was just a matter of actually getting there. Shikaji's glance then shifted towards Junko, who continued to be silent. She was certainly a respectful person, but never usually so quiet. It gave the tokubetsu jounin the distinct impression that something was wrong, but he didn't push too hard to figure out what that might be at the moment. If she didn't want to talk about it, he wouldn't press her for an answer, but he would always be there to listen if she wanted to talk. Firmly grasping Junko's hand in his own, Shikaji looked towards the road home in the distance. "Let's go," he decided, saving the task of tracking the Fox for some time in the future. With a quick pause to summon a messenger bird to send ahead of them with details of the events that had transpired, Shikaji began his long march home.

Exit.

Akimichi Chojiro
Come to think of it, Chojiro wasn't entirely sure how someone was taught the Gates either. Shikaji had said that he didn't know he could use them and just kind of did it. If that's all it took though the Akimichi was the irrefutable king of just doing stuff.

He averted his gaze as his friend locked hands with the greatest thing to come out of their journey. It had been a long one, a hard one, filled with sleepless nights and more anger than he thought could be fit into half a year. Seeing Shikaji with Junko though was the closest thing he had seen to his friend being his old self. That was a blessing itself and, whether he would say it or not he would never know, he was thankful for running into the woman.

He did look forward. He looked forward to seeing the village, eating some home cooking, and finding out what had come of the war. He did look backward too. Back to the inn where they met Junko, back to the leyline where his fist snuffed out that natural beauty, and back to the recent bandit attack where his friend pummeled a bunch of randos into near paste.

The future was uncertain and that was the only thing he knew for certain.

A hand grasped hers, and Junko's fingers interlaced with Shikaji's from reflex, allowing her a moment of peace and relaxation. She was embarrassed and worried about her outburst, but there wasn't really anything she could do about it, now. All that the silver-haired girl could do was try and put her best face forward, and leave her failures in the past. Never look back, she thought to herself, but for some reason, that thought brought a chill, causing one more tear to slide from a bright blue eye, dropping to the dirt below. It wasn't a comforting thought at all, and she shook her head, wiping the moisture away with one finger. No, I guess I should remember where I came from... Seeing the irony, she let her lips twist up in a slightly sardonic smile. ...says the amnesiac.
