Having completed his previous quest of acquiring groceries, Masamune had engaged in the equally-mundane followup quest of delivering them to his small apartment. When that was done, he had set about the task of preparing food. Given that it was, what might be considered in Kemurigakure, anyway, a nice day outside, he decided that he might as well sit in the park for a picnic lunch. It was a slight change of pace, the thought made him vaguely uncomfortable but he was of a desire to familiarize himself with this place, at least, and it seemed a good enough way as any to do so. Plus, it was practical, given that he needed to eat, even if he was part machine much of the time.

Perhaps surprisingly, Masamune was a rather adept cook. He had spent so much time on his own, alone, that he had needed to cook food for himself. At first he was quite bad at it, lacking skill and experience, but both those things were developed and honed over time, with a decade of practice. His cookery might not pass at any fine restaurants, and certainly it couldn't be described as refined, but it was rustic, hearty, and homely. For himself, at least, he found it to be quite delicious.

So, the masked man ventured into the Crescendo Park. According to the old stories, a famous battle had taken place here in ages past, but from the view of the scenic park now, one couldn't tell that just by looking at it. One would struggle to tell that it had even been destroyed as recently as two years previously, during the invasion from Konohagakure. As the Hollow One scouted around for a place to sit and eat, carrying a small bag containing a bento at his side, he reflected over how now, if such a thing occurred again, he would somehow have been roped into defending this village, too. How so much had changed.

"Excuse Me, Pardon Me, Coming Through, Watch Your Stuff!"

Thus were the boisterous warnings of the young Monk rushing through the streets. Commoners of various trades and professions struggled to keep their belongings as he clumsily bumped his way through the Village avenue.

"Freaking kid...," one of many muttered under their breath.

Shiko was starving, and in dire need of food! Training at the Dojo today had been rather hectic, and he was now feeling the need for protein. He came into a rather busy barbecue joint. People were loud with laughter. He could feel the joy emanating off of them, and it made the young Monk smile contently. It was nice. The Village seemed to be relatively happy, despite the current political climate.

"What would you like, sir?"

"A Bento Tsukune Platter please!" he said cheerfully, his voice bursting with excitement.

Very well. We'll let you know when it's ready," the man said with a plain tone of voice.

"Yay!"
Shiko dashed through the park with bento in tow, running toward his usual spot. Shiko always picked the same bench in the center of the park. One could say he was a creature of routine and habit. He loved eating there, as many birds usually came to flutter on by as he ate. Though he reserved himself from the temptation of feeding them, as it might upset their stomachs, he still loved to watch them. The young Monk was quick, which allowed him to reach his destination swiftly.

When he got there however... some dude was on his bench, at his usual time, in his spot. This. This was not okay. Shiko sighed, and looked at the bento in his hand.

"He didn't know, he didn'tknow, hedidn'tknow...," Shiko chanted to himself whilst taking a deep breath.

Shiko worked up the courage to walk up to the man. He gave a polite bow before speaking up quietly and calmly. "Um... Sir... Do you mind scooting over? I just.. I usually sit there at this time of day and well..," he kind of stammered. He was bad at this clearly.

In truth, Masamune hadn't really gotten to spend much time in Amegakure before it was conquered in the war. The time that he did spend there, in fact, was time that he spent there as a young child. All of his teenager years, and now his adult years, had been spent outside the village, running from base to base, but never getting to live in a large village. Still, Masamune had some kind of gut feeling that, in Amegakure, he wouldn't have run into as many unusual teenagers as he had in Kemurigakure so far. This made the third one today, and if he had lacked more composure, his eye might have twitched in frustration when the boy asked for him to move. Instead, however, his face remained blank and expressionless, though admittedly it tilted somewhat to the side, gray eyes blinking twice.

While somewhat confused, Masamune certainly had no kind of attachment to the bench that he was sitting on. He was new to the village, after all, he didn't even have a favorite restaurant, let alone a favorite bench in the park. Slowly, wordlessly, the man stood, scarf pulled up close to his face obscuring his nose and everything under it from sight. He took a single step to the left, moving from the center of the bench to its right side, then sat back down in a fluid motion. Once settled again, he set his relatively modest looking bento onto his lap, having freed it from the confines of the bag that he carried.

"You're not good at talking," he stated, producing a pair of disposable chopsticks from his bag and breaking them apart with a snap. It wasn't a rebuke or a critique, just an observation.

Aoi adjusted the bags in her arms as she cut her way through the park on her way home from the grocery store. You could never trust the weather in Kemurigakure, or rather, you could. It was always rainy. As such Aoi was secured in a yellow rain slicker and an umbrella hooked to her pocket. Her ninja sandals, squishing in the wet ground.

Mentally, Aoi went through the chores she needed to hit before her mother got home from her shift: Groceries, laundry, some cleaning. Chores that had fallen by the wayside as final exams at the academy had started. Things Aoi wanted to catch up on before her team assignments came in later in the week and genin work began in earnest.

A cool breeze swept through the park, pulling Aoi from her thoughts. Two people caught her attention, Aoi blinked.

Is that the D-rank king? Aoi thought, recognizing the teen. He had done D-ranks at her the academy enough to win a derogatory nickname from her yearmates.

Is that his sensei? She wondered, admiring the older masked man talking to the teen with wide eyes. She hadn’t seen many jounin except for blurs on the rooftops.

She was a few paces from them and her path would bring her right past them. Aoi had been looking long enough that it would be weird for her not to send a greeting their way, and she wasn't anti-social to want to avoid talking to an acquaintance. As she started to pass them she gave a friendly wave to-

Oh shit, what’s his name?

Shiko knew this was awkward. Was it a little petty to ask this grown-up to move over? Probably. But he didn't have much going for him. His routine was about all he had. He wasn't exactly living that stellar life of adventure that most of the people in his age group got to enjoy. He was a soldier by name, but he was more like a steward than anything else. He cleaned floors, he cut gardens, he found cats, and many other demeaning Genin jobs that rookies eventually grew out of. At least rookies that weren't him. He thought that the procedure from the Science Division would allow him to feel different, but his life was exactly the same as it once was.

Chores, no gratitude, and ridicule. The King of D-Ranks he was called. Another name for the King of Losers.

So getting to sit where he wanted was the least he could ask for, wasn't it? "Yeah... I guess I am, haha," he laughed nervously, as the man graciously moved for him. Shiko bowed in thanks. "Arigato... It means a lot, sir."

The teen then sat down next to the man and took out his barbecue-filled bento. One would think a Monk would be more wholesome with some kind of vegetarian platter, or Tofu of some kind. But that was a dumb stereotype. Not everyone was the same. Some people were more carnivorous than others, and as long as Shiko respected each animal he ate and didn't waste food.. He was fine eating what he wanted to eat. At least rather than trying to eat what others THOUGHT he should be eating.

Before he could make a word however, someone familiar waved to him to say hi. Someone he recognized but could not recall right away. Where had he seen the girl from before?

"Hi... You...," he awkwardly said while rubbing the back of his head, trying to recall her name.

Was it Azula? He felt like it was Azula.

While Masamune could not sympathize with a special bench in the park, he figured it probably routine enough that everyone in the world had their little idiosyncrasies. Who was he to criticize the strange haired boy if the park bench was his? He was content to leave well enough alone, and to let the conversation end there, but the arrival of another presence - someone staring at them - was hard not to notice. And that was saying something; Morimoto Masamune was an assassin by trade, and being keenly aware of his surroundings, and when he might be noticed, was a particular skill that he needed in his profession. However, he was fairly certain that even a blind person would have been able to tell she was staring at them. It seemed like the weirdness here was multiplying. It was reaching a point now where the man couldn't help but wonder if he was turning out to be a magnet for weirdos.

His response was, predictably, tactless. She did not initiate the conversation, though she did seem to want to say something, so he remained silent to let her speak, though he did stare intently at her as he awaited her words. His bento sat, untouched, in his lap, hands neatly folded atop it with the chopsticks, as he observed, unblinking, the third arrival. It was probably very unsettling, certainly moreso than he would actually intend for it to be, he just didn't know what to say while he was waiting for her to muster the courage to do so, herself. There was something about her that was undeniably cute, though, like a small and precious child that he had to protect. She seemed strangely familiar, too. Weird, indeed.

“Jiyon Aoi,” she introduced, pointing to herself. It wasn’t that weird that he didn’t remember her name, they probably hadn’t even been properly introduced. That said, the boy was being painfully awkward. It wasn’t like Aoi had participated in harassing him, although maybe he associated her with less than stellar class.

“It’s nice to see you again senpai.” She smiled, making an effort to be personable, and finding a socially acceptable way to skirt around the fact that she had no idea what his name was. Harambe? Maybe?

Her eyes slid to the side to the older ninja who was staring at her unnervingly. “Are you eating lunch with your sensei?” She asked, wondering if she was disturbing something.

"Hamada Shiko," he replied back with a soft smile. He was surprised she hadn't immediately snorted at him or made some kind of rude remark. Maybe not everyone from her year was the same? That was a refreshing little tidbit to his day. The purple haired Ninja Monk was glad. She also.. had a strange aura about her. She was too young to be someone the teenager was attracted too, but for some reason he could feel like she would grow up to be quite something. And it presented something of a passive appreciation, albeit not a real attraction. She was like a pretty bird you saw in a park. You acknowledged its beautiful feathers, but it wasn't something you wanted to fuck.

"I appreciate the kind sentiment. I hope today's been treating you well, Aoi-chan."

Shiko then looked her up and down with a puzzled look on his face. "Isn't it lunchtime? Why don't you have any food? Unless you plan on eating something from that grocery bag..." he said with a small chuckle following after.

The two children seemed to engage in a conversation without Masamune needing to engage at all. When it became clear that Aoi was not speaking to him, Masamune looked away and turned to examine the homemade lunch in his lap. Removing the top of the bento, he gently set it aside, sliding it into the bag that he had been carrying. Then, lifting the chopsticks he held in his other hand, he poked around at the contents of his lunch a bit, moving the rice, the salad, and the other little dishes around a bit, before taking a bite of the salad and vegetables. Masamune wasn't particularly fond of salads or vegetables or anything, but he did prefer healthy eating, and appreciated the freshness of recently purchased vegetables well enough, so he did so anyway. As he chewed, he examined the two children again, head tilting to the side a bit as Aoi seemed to imply that he might have been the boy's teacher. Masamune had never taught anyone anything before. "I've never taught anyone before. I'm not a teacher. I guess I could, but..."

Aoi adjusted the bags, having almost forgotten the weight until they were brought up. Bags filled with cheap food, easily prepared food, and what was on sale. Anyone who did their own shopping would be able to determine from the contents that Aoi was just scraping by. Not that they could see the contents of her bags from where they were. Aoi’s polite laugh was a little stilted, nonetheless.

She had gotten herself a little convenience store style sushi combo that had been on sale for a lunch. She even got herself carbonated pineapple milk, which was a little bit of an unnecessary purchase but she had just graduated so, it wasn't too bad, right?

In the slight pause between Shiko’s question and Aoi beginning to start her reply, the masked older shinobi spoke up.

“Ah. My mistake then, shinobi-san.” Aoi apologized, though now there was the question of why they were sitting together. They didn’t look related. And there was too big of an age difference for them to be year mates, unless the older shinobi was much less impressive than she thought. A bit of a disappointing thought since it had been mostly the promise of speaking to a real life awesome ninja that had drawn Aoi over.

"Yeah.. No he is not my sensei. I don't currently have a sensei, actually. Kemuri's low on resources at the moment, and it's not like I'm doing anything high-profile in the village that would require a supervisor...," he said, whilst sulking a bit at the mention of it. He sighed and nibbled on his barbecue bento, with the glazed sauce complimenting the tender meat in its salty and juicy goodness. At least it gave him money for food.

"My parents say that ambition is the shadow of greed. That only through a humble attitude can I hope to perfect and balance my mind. If I become impatient over my current situation, then it will only serve to make me weaker (and therefore more ineligible to rise above my current station). So I'm trying to keep it together. There's no way I'll be stuck at this level forever," he tried to say cheerfully, but he wasn't sure if he was convincing himself. He continued to munch and nibble at his food, not really feeling the need to keep on discussing it. The older fellow also made his own protest against the assertion.

"As to why we are sitting together... It's just a random happenstance. The Spirits of the World moving us where we're supposed to be at the moment we're supposed to be. One could say this meeting was predestined.. Both the one with me and him... and you as well, Aoi-chan."

He kept a very serious face for a few moments - letting the words sink in for a bit - before he giggled with a toothy grin.

"I swear I meant what I just said... It just probably sounded a little strange and dumb," he said with a nod and a shrug.

While Masamune felt like the younger boy's words were pretentious, or at least naive. Masamune couldn't say he believed in things like that. Or, at least, he had never had anyone to teach him such. Given that, anyways, he had never encountered such things living life on his own, and that was enough for him to probably discredit such things. He opted not to say anything, however, simply keeping silent in the face of the monk's charge that his own statements might have seemed a little dumb. Even if Masamune perhaps agreed, he knew at least better than to say anything. Not, at least, to a child. In truth, however, Masamune didn't pay the speech itself much mind at all, instead his mind focused on something else entirely. The boy with the barbecue had pointed out that he didn't actually have a sensei at all, likely due to the limitations of resources as a result of the ongoing war. That thought caused the masked man's brow to furrow. He, himself, had grown up without a teacher. He had senpais, but no real formal instructor, and much of what he knew had been self-taught, or developed in the case of the Rinnegan. He had always been a little jealous, deep down, of those children who had gotten to learn and grow with teachers and mentors. The thought of others in a position like him was strange, but it was not comforting. He didn't want others to share in his sadness and his jealousy. He turned a glancing eye towards the young girl. "Do you have a sensei?"

Aoi listened to Shiko’s speech. He was adorable, she decided. It was not the most appropriate thought to have towards one’s senpai. She was supposed to look up to him and respect him. That however, had been shot in the foot at its birth when she only knew him as the ‘D-rank king’. Still, the more he spoke the more adorable she found him. He was wrong, of course. Ambition and greed were very different things. She was not greedy for aiming higher than the lot life had given her. Or if she was greedy then greed was not such a bad thing. Still she smiled and listened attentively.

“No, no Hamada-senpai.” She protested politely when he self depreciated at the end. “I’m glad to hear the thoughts of someone more experienced than me. I hadn’t realized resources were so thin these days,” Aoi really hoped, perhaps unkindly, that there was another reason that kept Shinko from having a sensei. Otherwise a clanless nobody like her, despite managing above average grades, would be unlikely to get a sensei. It would make everything harder. Simmering frustration welled up in her stomach, but Aoi swallowed it down. She wasn’t a child anymore, she didn’t get the luxury of temper tantrums. Besides, there was no reason to get upset before she knew the truth.

The older shinobi, who had still yet to identify himself piped in with a question. “Ah not yet. Our academy teacher is supposed to call us in soon to give us our assignments. Whether that be a team and a sensei or not.”

"Indeed. Thankfully I've been keeping up my training in between missions... Hopefully I'll get a chance to prove myself in the future. Now that you've graduated perhaps we can spar in the future," he offered for a later time. His physical attributes were starting to exceed that of the typical Genin, and hopefully with enough time and training he would be able to prove he was equivalent to a Chuunin. Even though Ranks didn't matter for Buddhist Monks, he still wanted to feel recognized. It was kind of boring being at the bottom barrel forever.

He was a bit distracted however at the older man's question at Aoi. The conversation shifted away from him, so he just sat and listened to the two. Apparently she wasn't sure yet. "Maybe you'll get a sensei, Aoi. Don't let my bad luck worry you too much, ha..ha.."

His laughter was definitely fake. Also Shiko was still eating.

With his food, by now, all but forgotten, it was Shiko's laughter that rang hollow in Masamune's ears. His lips twisted into a wry frown, eyes narrowed ever so slightly in thought. He didn't have, in a sense, that much authority in this place. Contrary to that, anyway, at the present time he didn't really have anything to do, and what he had in mind probably didn't disrupt any plans that much. At least, so he thought, and thus, Masamune's mind was more-or-less settled. With a fluid motion, he stood, turning at a swift angle so that he was facing both the boy who was seated on the bench, and the girl standing across from him. He was silent for a long moment, then, probably looking quite awkward, having so suddenly stood and turned, only to say nothing. Eventually, however, he let the words come to him.

"I'll train the two of you, for now," he stated in his deep voice, gray eyes visible over his scarf, shifting from one of the genin to the other. It was a sudden offer, and after a moment he realized that neither of the two might have wanted his instruction. He was a complete stranger here, and though it did not show through his straight posture and obscured face. Even if they could see his face, it remained completely unmoved through the sudden wave of anxiety that he was feeling. "If you want, anyway..."

Oh, this is turning awkward. Aoi realized. She had mistakenly stepped on a landmine and hadn’t managed to step off it in time. She was quiet, fumbling for a way to ease the tension in the air. Before she could put her thoughts into order, the older shinobi stood up.

Aoi blinked. He didn’t say anything. Nor did he leave, finally having enough of the awkwardness of two teens. When he did open his mouth it wasn’t a goodbye like Aoi thought.

She blinked. “You wa-” he interrupted her with his late continuation. Internally Aoi screamed at the awkwardness of it all.

She glanced at Shinko to get his read on the matter before looking back at the older shinobi. “I would,” She agreed, though it was with some hesitancy. He was weird.

Ha...Ha..," his laughter died out.

He was trying to put on a brave face but it clearly wasn't going over too well, based off the looks Aoi and the old man were giving him. Red hue was shaded on the young Monk's cheeks. Maybe he should have just stayed quiet. Now he made things awkward. It's not like he WANTED their pity. Did he? Was he just hungry for attention? Oh god, that wasn't good. That wasn't good at all. No wonder he was weak. Selfishness like that clouded the mind, which kept him from the path of enlightenment, which lessened the overall strength he could muster.

He was his own worst enemy.

His mental spiral was interrupted however, as the older man stood up for some odd reason. Shiko tilted his head, continuing to munch on barbecue as he seemed to.. pose? Or was it just some awkward way of standing? Either way, the man was taking an awful long time to say anything. Maybe he was walking away. Maybe Shiko had scared him off. That would be just typical.

"I'll train the two of you, for now. If you want anyway...."

What?

Shiko's mouth was open, a piece of sizzled meat still in his mouth as he tried to find the words. Noticing this rather rude behavior, he quickly took it in his mouth and chewed and swallowed. How embarrassing. But it caught him off guard. Was this guy even qualified? Was HE HIMSELF qualified to ask that? It's not like anyone else was stepping up to the plate to train them.

So many things ran through his mind and he didn't know how to answer. He looked down for a bit as he tried to process it all. Aoi seemed to awkwardly agree to the proposition. Shiko... was having doubts however. Not in the man himself, but rather in himself. He supposed opportunity and fate would decide whether or not this was a mistake. But in the end.. he decided to go with the river flow of destiny. Perhaps this would open up a new path for him. A less... humiliating path.

"I... I would be honored. Thank you...," he said while keeping his head down in an awkward bow (as he was still sitting with his food on lap).

The response, from both of the younger two, was awkward to say the least. Masamune was not the least in a position to judge them for that, though. It actually relieved him, in a way, to know that the two of them were willing to accept the teaching that he had offered. It was in that moment that he had suddenly become concerned about his lack of practical experience in this regard. Still, he couldn't back out now, and he was well-committed to this course of action.

The man of steel cleared his throat, running a hand through his dark hair as he wondered exactly what he should do now. This wasn't the best place, or best scenario, for training to begin. After-all, they were in the middle of eating lunch, or taking home groceries, in Aoi's case. He pondered for a moment, his own lunch taking only small part in the considerations that he was making in that moment about how the three of them should next proceed.

Motioning with his hand for the monk to sit up, rather than continue bowing to him, Masamune addressed Shiko. "Finish eating," he instructed, turning to glance at the young woman next. "Take your groceries home. Meet me in front of the Kemurikage Office Building in an hour."

With those simple instructions, and lunch in hand, the masked ninja turned, and departed.

Exit.

Aoi’s eyes widened. An hour was not a lot of time. And being punctual, ready, and responsible was important to Aoi. She had to put her full kit together, put groceries away, as well as wolf down her lunch, in less than an hour since she had to account for travel time. She hefted her groceries tighter in her arms, hard determination pushing past her anxiety. “Right then.” She said to Shinko since Masamune was already gone. “I'll see you in an hour then senpai.” She said as a goodbye, with a short but polite bow of her head, before quickly heading off to her apartment at a quick pace.

Shiko nodded, happy that this was actually happening. A genuine smile formed on his face. "I'll try not to let you down, sensei!" he said cheerfully as they both walked away. He waved goodbye to Aoi as she rushed to finish her errand. The purple haired teen's feet swung excitedly on the bench with a new giddiness. This was going to be fun.

And so Shiko continued eating, until the barbecue was all done and his lunch had ended. He rested his arms behind his head, and leaned against the bench without a care in the world.

He had plenty of time.

OOC: -> Thread End! Good job guys! I had a lot of fun <3
