The voices were sweet and smooth like honey, yet so deep that Kensho was pretty sure he was feeling the words more than hearing them. The dozens of voices surrounding him were slightly out of sink. The effect was like waves lapping up at the shore, one on top of another.
"Yes, you are correct. I am Satori. You have recently gained the ability to draw more directly on my power... but such gifts come with a price. This conduit works both ways, thus my invitation to you. I must say I am rather pleased you decided to accept. It gets rather lonely in here, and this is so much nicer than merely eves-dropping on your thoughts, wouldn't you agree?"
Every word drew Kensho in deeper into a trance. It felt good to succumb. Why had he resisted this his whole life? Had the hermit lied to him about the danger's of the Yokai? Wait... what was it that he had told Kensho? Who was he even thinking about now? His mind was clouding.
"What...what are you doing to me? What's happening to my mind?
"Nevermind that. This was always the way things would go between us. How could it go otherwise? As soon as you started drawing actively on my power, you became vulnerable. Soon I will be free of your feeble body. You want to serve me don't you Kensho?"
"What...no...yes of course... wait...I'm not sure..." The pressure was intoxicating, consuming, numbing. How could he think? What was even real... wait!
Somehow, deep down, some part of Kensho remained his own and willed his bloodline into action. Eyes turned red and saw; they saw through the illusion that the yokai beast was weaving.
The reflections surrounding him swirled black and in their place stood the image of Satori as he had glimpsed it in his dreams. His head cleared - free of whatever enchantment had ensnared him. Though he knew this was happening in his mind, it felt and looked like solid physical reality. Taking a deep breath Kensho centered himself
"So, you wish to resist? To turn away the bliss I offer? Who are you to chose suffering... to defy my will!? You may be my prison, but you cannot escape me, and it will not be long before you seek me out of your own accord, for only I can lift the burdens of the world from your shoulders. You may go for now as you have proven yourself resistant to my call for now. But I know you, and I know you will not turn away from me forever."
Kensho slowly backed out of the room. His heart was pounding, his body trembling. The aura of this beast, even sealed away, was terrifying. As soon as he exited the room, he turned an ran with all his might, backtracking, across twisted staircases and walkways, out through the white hole into his familiar mind space beyond.
The instant he was back he opened his eyes and stood. Shaking, he made his way to his kitchen, opened a bottle of sake, and began drinking.
